{"id":10079,"date":"2019-04-12T13:15:56","date_gmt":"2019-04-12T16:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=10079"},"modified":"2019-04-12T13:15:56","modified_gmt":"2019-04-12T16:15:56","slug":"tired-and-frustrated-waverley-parents-of-autistic-son-plea-for-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=10079","title":{"rendered":"Tired and frustrated: Waverley parents of autistic son plea for help"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>WAVERLEY: <\/strong>Parents\n of an autistic child in Waverley say they\u2019re frustrated with having no \nhelp to deal with their son\u2019s outbursts, and are going public as a \nresult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shannon Mosher and Andrew Mader say they have gone for \nhelp everywhere they possibly could, and all they\u2019ve been given is \nparent training and nothing more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI felt confident in our \nhealth-care system when he was first diagnosed, that we would get Ethan \nin for speech therapy minimum three days a week,\u201d said Mosher. \u201cWhat we \ngot was parent training. We learned how to be speech therapists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\n said he did get some time with N.S. Hearing and Speech once a month \nwhen he was two or three, and was in the EIBI Program when he was \nfive-years-old. Ethan helped develop the program, becoming the first \nchild to use an iPad to speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey weren\u2019t using the iPad until Ethan joined the program,\u201d said Mader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was great, but for Ethan it was just nine months long and each week saw the time he had it decrease until it came to an end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\n was great while he was in it, they taught him some stuff,\u201d said Mosher.\n \u201cI imagine if it was in his life longer through his childhood, he would\n be in a totally different place right now. It\u2019s overwhelming to see the\n benefits of it, but that my kid doesn\u2019t get it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/56395095_10156948033775281_5554970886576013312_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10080\"\/><figcaption>Ethan Mader has severe autism and his parents are at their wits end after not getting directed to any resources that could help them. (Shannon Mosher Photos)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Having spent 10 years with no help for their situation has left them tired and frustrated, with nowhere to turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve\n been fighting for the fence; the service dog; his speech therapy,\u201d said\n Mosher. \u201cWe just want help with one thing. One thing that will help \nmake our lives easier. He\u2019s so severe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both parents are unable to work so they can be home to care for Ethan, and his two sisters, and because of health issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mosher said the Department of Community Services Disability Support for Children is\n willing to give the family a little bit of money for respite, so the \ntwo can go out for an evening. But that\u2019s not what she wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI \nwant Ethan to get better, because I\u2019ve proven the more you work with \nhim, talk to him, and give him some bio-medical interventions he has \ngains,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was told he would be diapers his whole life;\n he isn\u2019t. She was told he would never speak, Ethan has been saying \n\u2018mom\u2019 and he has completely transitioned off his iPad for speech. It was\n suggested he get more speech therapy; PRT; ABA; occupational therapy; and emotional therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\n feel if he had what was recommended, which equals to about $80-100,000 a\n year, he\u2019d be better off, but our kid isn\u2019t getting any of those \nthings,\u201dshe said. \u201cI\u2019m trying to help him the best I can, but I can\u2019t do\n it all. I\u2019ve taken him in to the IWK and it seems like nobody cares.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\n Mosher-Mader family said they have reached out and had meetings with \nMLA Bill Horne twice; and Autism Nova Scotia, among others. While Horne \nsuggested the GoFundMe fundraiser, that\u2019s all the help he could provide \nthem and Autism N.S. has not called back to direct them to relevant \nresources to assist them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/56524208_10156948034385281_4853826572244746240_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10081\"\/><figcaption>(Shannon Mosher Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As Ethan is a flight risk of running  away, the family has setup a GoFundMe to raise funds to have a fence  built around their Rolling Hills Drive property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe just would \nlike him to be able to play outside without us being his bodyguard \n24\/7,\u201d said Mosher. \u201cHe has tried to escape before so it would be nice \nto have that buffer that if he did get out he could not leave the \nproperty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one less thing that would help to make our lives so much better as it\u2019s a struggle daily.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mader said they&#8217;re just trying to have Ethan feel like he\u2019s a kid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re just trying to be able to give him a chance to play outside in a safe, fenced-in environment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To donate to the fence fundraiser, check out their GoFundMe page by searching for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/ethan039s-funds-for-autism-services\">\u201cEthan\u2019s funds for autism services.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\n the future they are hopeful of having Ethan screened for environmental \nillness; speech therapy offered; and even a service dog trained to \nassist Ethan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WAVERLEY: Parents of an autistic child in Waverley say they\u2019re frustrated with having no help to deal with their son\u2019s outbursts, and are going public as a result.
