My  destination is Kartbahn where the Racing for Research fundraiser in  support of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is taking place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The  April 10 event was organized by Harold T. Barrett Junior High student  Aaliyah Cook and her best friend Cassidy Fletcher, who attends  Ridgecliff Middle School in Timberlea. Aaliyah and her family just moved  to Beaver Bank a few months ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So it came our time to strap in. The girls said they were ready to accept my challenge and race me on the track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Racing for Research- JDRF\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5rElsJId2ZQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Here we go! <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So\n Aaliyah, Cassidy, myself in the no. 1 (perfect race number, but if they\n had a no. 0 I\u2019d have taken that one for my favourite Pro Stock driver, \nShawn Turple); and Megan Jean from JDRF went down to the track. My \ngo-kart had a Go Pro from Kartbahn attached to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After getting  some instructions it\u2019s time to put on the balaclava and our helmets.  Next we all get assigned carts and head to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/d2xljn7473fnu9.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/155-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10095\"\/><figcaption>We&#8217;re racing at Kartbahn. (Amanda Williams photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once we\u2019re in and\n the karts are running it\u2019s time to go out. The first lap is a slow lap,\n but once we hit the start the cart\u2019s pedals controls are released and \nit\u2019s race on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re slowed a few times by cars spinning out-I \nthink because of how much power they have it\u2019s hard for some to control.\n But when we were green flag racing, I had the pedal to the metal. And \nit showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once our time was up, the checkered flag waves and our race is over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amanda  comes down with the race results. And it shows I came out on top of the  six of us that were on track. I couldn\u2019t believe it. They have done other fundraisers in previous years for JDRF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are doing this so we can raise money for more research into Type 1 diabetes,\u201d said Cook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fletcher said she had a lot of fun racing around the Kartbahn track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was so exciting,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The support was amazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere was about 20-25 people here right at the start of the event that went out racing,\u201d said Cook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the final tally was all counted up from donations received, Cassidy and Aaliyah raised $1,345 for JDRF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now  that I showed what I can do on the go-carting track and snag first  place, guess my next thing is to hit the big tracks and wheel a race  car?
