FLETCHERS LAKE: <\/strong>Maria\n Mihai\u2019s nickname as \u201cThe Calculator\u201d seems fitting for someone who\u2019d \nrather sit and answer math questions than play Fortnite or other video \ngames, like her peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mihai, who attends Holland Road Elementary \nSchool, recently had her name listed as an Honourable Mention in a \nUniversity of Waterloo math exam. She\u2019s in Grade 6. The exam was for \nthose in Grade 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was honoured to have made the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI worked really hard at it,\u201d she said. \u201cI was hoping all that studying and work would pay off, and it did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt makes me really happy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mihai, who lives with her family in Fletchers Lake, said it just shows that practice makes perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt keeps proving to me that when you work hard, it pays off,\u201d said Mihai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\n said there has been a lot of sacrifices she has had to make to focus on\n her math. That includes not getting to hang out with friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t get to hang out with my friends a lot because I need to practice to ensure I\u2019m good at this,\u201d said Mihai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mihai\u2019s friends have nicknamed her because of her math wizardy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA\n lot of them call me a math genius, and when people think of me they \nthink of math nerd,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s funny, whenever they\u2019re having \ntrouble with math they ask me for help. It feels good to help people \nout.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She shook her head in agreement when asked if she sees herself as math genius or nerd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Math is something that is her niche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s\n some things that just come naturally to me, like they just work,\u201d said \nMihai. \u201cI can\u2019t explain it, but the pieces just fit together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She credits the Holland Road School teachers Mrs. Wisen who helped setup the Math Club at the Fletchers Lake school; her Grade 2\/3 teacher; and Mrs. Larade, the school principal; her mom, her dad, and her sister Ana for their support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mihai also won a $200 cheque for first in the province in the contest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s next for Mihai?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m working on my Grade 10 math credit, and all I need to do a financial project and an exam,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the future, what does she see herself doing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\n want to be a statistician, people who research and work with data,\u201d \nsaid Mihai. \u201cNumbers are the best part of math. They\u2019re my favourite \npart.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
