{"id":10417,"date":"2019-05-30T10:45:43","date_gmt":"2019-05-30T13:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=10417"},"modified":"2019-05-30T10:45:43","modified_gmt":"2019-05-30T13:45:43","slug":"ratepayers-association-has-busy-year-supporting-community-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=10417","title":{"rendered":"Ratepayers association has busy year supporting community"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align:left\"><strong>WINDSOR JUNCTION: <\/strong>The LWF Ratepayers Association \n(LWFRA) is proceeding forward as if they can continue to support \nworthwhile community initiatives, all the while waiting for a report \nfrom HRM dealing with area rates such as theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an  early May interview, President Marni Tuttle spoke about what lies ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\n have been reaching out to our partners at HRM, in the finance \ndepartment and each time we\u2019ve been told not to worry somethings \ncoming,\u201d said Tuttle. \u201cNormally we would have submitted our business \nplan to HRM at the end of March, but they haven\u2019t made that request, but\n they also have not notified us of any changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re hopeful the report will be a positive one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tuttle said the group has had no contact from their HRM Councillor Steve Streatch to inform them otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\n started the year like we were sitting on the fence, and as the area \nrate has been collected again on the latest tax bills we\u2019re anticipating\n HRM understands this isn\u2019t something that can be cut in a single blow, \nand that it will have major ramifications across pour community if they \nmake that choice,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the AGM is the \nLWFRA\u2019s opportunity to report back to the community on how they have \ninvested the area rate money all residents pay on their taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some\n of the highlights from this past year include: the ongoing support of \nthe WJCC; and because of that support they are the largest employer of \nyouth in the community, providing lifeguards; summer camps; and swimming\n lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s important to us because it provides a \nservice to our community that we need,\u201d she said. :\u201dIt also gives youth \nthat live here a chance to do skill building in their own community. We \nfeel that\u2019s a way we build intergenerational relationships across Fall \nRiver, Windsor Junction, and Lakeview.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The LWFRA continues\n to partner with the Lakeview Homeowners Association in assisting them \nto offer their summer program at HRM\u2019s park in Lakeview; infrastructure \nto make the camp better, and improve their HRM park for continued public\n use; and Keloose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe specifically worked on improvements \nor replacement of community resources in 2018. That included \nimprovements to the WJCC entrance; seed funding for a new LWF Baseball \ncanteen; and fencing at the WJCC,\u201d said Tuttle. \u201cWhat the community \ncalls the canteen provides a great deal of the infrastructure they need \nto provide baseball programming across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s more than just a place we let our kids get an ice cream at the end of a baseball game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\n local Scouting group came to the LWFRA for funding for their facility \nto make it more usable; SWEPS Trails, to help inter-connectivity as part\n of active transportation between neighbouring communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\n have been able to support all of these projects to the best of our \nability after an evaluation of their impact on our community,\u201d said \nTuttle. \u201cWe know there are requests coming for 2019-2020, and have heard\n from the WJCC and Lakeview, and anticipating a request from Keloose.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WINDSOR JUNCTION: The LWF Ratepayers Association (LWFRA) is proceeding forward as if they can continue to support worthwhile community initiatives, all the while waiting for a report from HRM dealing with area rates such as theirs.
