{"id":10486,"date":"2019-06-18T22:33:51","date_gmt":"2019-06-19T01:33:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=10486"},"modified":"2019-06-18T22:33:51","modified_gmt":"2019-06-19T01:33:51","slug":"it-looked-like-i-was-walking-in-a-costco-there-was-so-much-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=10486","title":{"rendered":"\u201cIt looked like I was walking in a Costco there was so much food.\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><strong><em>Lockview Grade 9 students projects cover vast array of subjects from keeping our water safe to helping homeless <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FALL RIVER: <\/strong>Making\n a difference in the community has left students in Jennifer \nMontgomery\u2019s Grade 9 Citizenship class with an \u201ceye-opening experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\n groups projects ranged from helping protect the Shubenacadie River and \nassisting in the push to stop Alton Gas; to students volunteering with \nFeed Nova Scotia; to making a bee garden with a teachers help; and \nmaking up 10 backpacks full of supplies for those less fortunate, which \nthe students then delivered to Beacon House in Lower Sackville on a hot \nsunny June afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrew Hare said their group volunteered \nthree hours each of their time with Feed Nova Scotia. It showed them \njust how many people are in need of food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe did it because there\n was food insecurity for some across the province,\u201d said Hare. \u201cWe \nthought that would make a difference if we helped out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group of five sorted 5,720 pounds of food on that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/file-308-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10489\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Oliver Horne said there was way more food than what he thought there would be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\n a surprise,\u201d said Horne of the amount of food he saw. \u201cIt looked like I\n was walking in a Costco there was so much food. That\u2019s just a fraction \nof what people need in the province.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trip to Feed N.S. has left an impact of the five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s probably a lot more students at our school than we can see with food insecurities and need help with it,\u201d said Horne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/file-307-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10488\"\/><figcaption>This group created a bee garden. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Piper\n Jones; Cora Johnson; and Mahala Wile created a bee garden so they can \nhelp the bee population. They had assistance from Mr. Rankin, who they \nthanked for his guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI always see and hear that bees are \nvery important, they help us with a lot of things like growing food,\u201d \nsaid Wile. \u201cThey\u2019re going extinct so we want to do whatever we can to \nhelp them live on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jones said it was important for them to actually build a bee garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought it was very key that we stepped up and were active to build a garden,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/file-309-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10490\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthew\n Simmons said they raised awareness about the plight of the Shubenacadie\n River and the outcome that may be after Alton Gas dumps salt into it. \nThey have a website which can be located at \nhttps:\/\/savetheshubenacadie.wixsite.com\/home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was important to\n us because we want to stop the destruction of a habitat and save the \nbass that live there,\u201d added Nickolas Kuttner. \u201cThe salt brine going \ninto the river will impact the environment and the Mi\u2019kmaq people who \nlive around it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fourth group of five students did their \nproject to help out those less fortunate. They filled 10 backpacks to \ndeliver to Beacon House.
