{"id":11965,"date":"2019-07-11T11:29:02","date_gmt":"2019-07-11T14:29:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=11965"},"modified":"2019-07-11T11:29:02","modified_gmt":"2019-07-11T14:29:02","slug":"close-calls-has-resident-calling-for-action-soon-at-crosswalk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=11965","title":{"rendered":"Close calls has resident calling for action soon at crosswalk"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>FALL RIVER:<\/strong>\n After a pair of close calls at the crosswalk at Highway 2 and Coach \nAvenue (Schwarzwald Subdivision entrance), Jim Walsh is hopeful \nsomething will be done sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walsh was on his \nscooter crossing using the crosswalk to Fletcher Drive when a car zoomed\n right by him and never stopped as he crossed. This happened while \ntraffic coming on the other side of the road did stop to allow him to \ncross. The car that zoomed past him he estimates was not doing the 60 \nkm\/hr speed limit for this stretch of road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m worried about the\n kids coming down here, and they cross here to go swim down at the \ncanal,\u201d said Walsh. \u201cI see them cross here but cars don\u2019t stop. The cars\n just roar right through.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said people think that because it\u2019s Highway 2 they don\u2019t have to stop. That\u2019s not correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For\n himself, he goes down to Tim Hortons every morning to have coffee with \nhis friends. He takes Fletcher Drive to get away from the traffic, so he\n crosses there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been a couple times I\u2019ve had a near miss \nfrom vehicles that don\u2019t want to stop or if they see you they pile on \nthe brakes,\u201d said Walsh. \u201cOne of these days it\u2019s going to be too late. \nThey\u2019re not going to be able to stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s my fear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He \nisn\u2019t the only one who has had close calls. According to social media \nposts, there are near misses at the crosswalk almost daily as no one \nslows to the speed limit or for the crosswalk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a previous \ninterview, councillor Steve Streatch said the installation of a \ncrosswalk light would take place, but the timeline for that was unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe installation will occur sometime between the spring and fall,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Streatch said the next step is to have it lit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\n are several standards that exist, there are overhead lights and a new \nstandard introduced in Dartmouth &#8211; a beacon light,\u201d he said. \u201cWhatever \nends up here, I know will fit the needs of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FALL RIVER: After a pair of close calls at the crosswalk at Highway 2 and Coach Avenue (Schwarzwald Subdivision entrance), Jim Walsh is hopeful something will be done sooner rather than later.
