{"id":11989,"date":"2019-07-16T11:30:21","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T14:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=11989"},"modified":"2019-07-16T11:30:21","modified_gmt":"2019-07-16T14:30:21","slug":"couple-question-if-dairy-queen-right-fit-for-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=11989","title":{"rendered":"Couple question if Dairy Queen right fit for community"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>FALL RIVER:<\/strong> A Fall River couple is disappointed to hear that another fast food outlet will be calling the community home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dairy Queen is set to begin construction at the Fall River Plaza, with an opening scheduled for early 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> While they commend the owners efforts in bringing a business to Fall River. , the two are among several who wonder whether  it\u2019s the right fit for the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pamela and Nick Horne, along  with a few others, have concerns on the carbon footprint; the litter  from users, and traffic congestion from nearby  communities and Hwy 102. They just want people to think about their  options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s just a good opportunity to bring to light \nthe different impacts it will have on the community,\u201d said Pam Horne. \u201cA\n large impact it will have is on the environment; health and wellness; \nand it is also going to impact the community space we have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to impact traffic, which is already heavy in that area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\n said there will also be plastics used, litter, a stand-alone building \nwith a drive-thru, and it\u2019s within walking distance of three schools, \nalthough she acknowledged that not all are allowed to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\n not really striving towards the vision of our country in we\u2019re trying \nto reduce our carbon footprint, eliminate single-use plastics, and \npromote health and wellness,\u201d said Pam . \u201cI just think money isn\u2019t \neverything and that we\u2019re a smart community, we\u2019re a small community and\n that we can just do better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to take away from how \nmuch it takes to get a franchise up and running. It\u2019s a great \naccomplishment to do something like this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a previous interview, Peggy Rust, the franchisee bringing DQ to Fall River, said the store will be looking to hire 45 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re exited about being there and employing local people,\u201d Rust said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pam and Nick agreed the Dairy Queen will provide jobs for the youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\n will be a great economic opportunity for our community, but I don\u2019t \nthink it\u2019s the right thing for our community,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m not trying\n to stop it.
