WAVERLEY: <\/strong>The\n N.S. Fire School is looking at expanding it\u2019s training ground, and are \ncounting on the three levels of government for their support in doing \nso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, MLA Bill Horne and MP Darrell Samson were taken on a tour with Business Development Manager Darrell MacLean and Executive Director John Cunningham of their facilities and what their proposal is calling for. Councillor Steve Streatch was invited but had another commitment at city hall dealing with council items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MacLean spoke \nto Horne and Samson about the fire compound and the variety of scenarios\n setup for firefighters from across the province to train on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhether\n it is a federal\/provincial agreement where we get $2 million a year for\n six years that will mallow us to rebuild the infrastructure that is \nrequired immediately,\u201d said MacLean. \u201cThat rebuild will get all of the \nunions on board for coming to a new facility. It will get all of the \nvolunteer fire stations on board to coming to a new facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe all know everyone wants brand new brand new brand new. They want something different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fire school is half a century old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re\n 50 years old, we\u2019ve done an amazing job for the last 50, but we need to\n rebuild and look ahead for the next 50 years,\u201d said MacLean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \nthird step is to plan for the years of the service of the fire industry.\n Those are the three initiatives he sees as priorities for the fire \nschool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Samson agreed, however he said step two \u2014getting an agreement of funding in place\u2014is easier if step three was done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf\n step three was done, step two we would all throw in money to make it \nhappen,\u201d said Samson. \u201cWithout it and without the partnership step two \nis a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MacLean said everyone is waiting for the chain of command of yes\u2019 from HRM, to the province, to the feds for investment dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have nobody yet saying okay,\u201d said MacLean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Samson\n said it\u2019s not easy for infrastructure projects to find their ways onto \nthe Minister\u2019s desk for approval given how vast Canada is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou \ncan understand the complexity and why projects are very tough to get \nright through the system,\u201d said Samson. \u201cIf we had discussions on \npossible changes to standards, it makes it easier I think.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since \nthe tour, the Fire School has had some assistance from Conrad Brothers \nwho donated their time and material to construct the base of their new \ntrue-to-life vehicle extrication training intersection. It consists of \npower lines; street signs; ditches; and obstructions for a realistic \ntraining experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Samson and Horne both agreed they will start working on making those in the know aware of the proposal and what was forthcoming.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
