HALIFAX STANFIELD AIRPORT<\/strong>:\n A new air cargo logistics park at Halifax Stanfield International \nAirport will create hundreds of new jobs through construction of the \nfacility on 25 acres adjacent to Gateway Facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under bright \nsunshine, Central Nova MP Sean Fraser, HIAA President and CEO Joyce \nCarter, HRM Mayor Mike Savage, Potlotek First Nation Chief Wilbert \nMarshall, and Lena Metlege Diab, minister of Immigration, were on hand \nfor the official groundbreaking of the $36 million facility. The federal\n government is investing $18 million; the province $5 million; and HIAA \nthe remainder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked how many jobs the facility will bring, \nboth Carter and Fraser said they had to double check with airport staff \nat the numbers included in their speeches. The new facility will see 643\n jobs during construction. In the first year of the facility operating, \nmore than 3,300 full-time people will be employed. Five years out that \nnumber grows to 6,700 full-time jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy eyes have been open to the importance of trade corridors, not only to the national economy but the economies of people who live and work in the communities I represent,\u201d said Fraser. \u201cIt took me about six minutes to see the bottleneck that exists here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said investments like this one \ngets the economy moving along with hundreds of people put to work. The \npayscale for those jobs will vary on the position, Fraser said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen\n I was looking over the job creation numbers for this project I didn\u2019t \nbelieve them and had to double check them when I got here,\u201d he said with\n a chuckle. \u201cThis means a lot to lobster fishermen, to our agricultural \nsector and more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The park will include a new cargo apron area, \nbuildings for cargo handling, an aircraft de-icing facility, and \nassociated operational areas both airside and groundside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will become Atlantic Canada\u2019s largest cargo processing facility when built, something Carter said they\u2019re proud of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The facility is expected to open in early 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carter\n said staff have been kept busy working on site and building design, \nworking with the Mi\u2019kmaq representative and Chief Marshall on \narchaeological assessment, regulators at Transport Canada and potential \ntenants for the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Halifax Stanfield is at capacity for cargo so the new facility is a big plus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\n will have growth into the future as a result of this facility so it \nmeans the products can get to markets quicker and fresher, and, in the \ncase of lobsters, return a higher yield to our fisherman,\u201d said Carter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Realizing\n the potential to further enable regional exports and trade, Halifax \nInternational Airport Authority (HIAA) moved forward to construct the \nnew Air Cargo Logistics Park that will benefit all of Atlantic Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
