{"id":12339,"date":"2019-08-28T12:00:44","date_gmt":"2019-08-28T15:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=12339"},"modified":"2019-08-28T12:00:44","modified_gmt":"2019-08-28T15:00:44","slug":"ng-talks-small-business-help-during-fall-river-stop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=12339","title":{"rendered":"Ng talks small business help during Fall River stop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>FALL RIVER: <\/strong>The\n small businesses of the country are what helps to drive the Canadian \neconomy, said the Minister for Small Business and Export Promotion \nduring a quick stop in Fall River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mary Ng joined \nSackville-Preston-Chezzetcook MP Darrell Samson at the Tim Hortons in \nFall River. While there, the two spoke with residents at the store. They\n also spoke with Steve Taylor, manager\/franchisee of the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ng said she has heard a lot from small businesses and the federal government is working to help those.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\n hear how our small businesses want to be competitive and keep growing,\u201d\n said Ng, pointing to the reduction of the Small Business Tax from 11 \nper cent to nine per cent. \u201cThat\u2019s almost $7,500 at the end of a year \nand those small businesses can invest it in themselves. A family \nrestaurant for example could get an energy-efficient fridge. Convenience\n stores if they want to digitize their business so they can be more \nproductive, they can get a point-of-sale system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Small Business Tax is really helping businesses because it\u2019s making them more competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some small business owners feel more can be done. Ng said she\u2019s heard the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s  one of the lowest rates in the G7 because we want our businesses to be  competitive, but we\u2019ve also heard they want some help if they want to  make investments in their business,\u201d said Ng.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/290-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12341\"\/><figcaption>Small Business and Export Promotion Minister Mary Ng speaks to Fall River Tim Hortons owner Steve Taylor during a stop in Fall River in mid-August. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She said they have \nmade some changes to the tax rules this year that allows those in \nequipment processing or clean-tech, or an office buying software, a \ngreater share of that purchase can be written of in the year you make \nthat investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ng said small businesses are now able to \nnegotiate with credit card companies, and they\u2019re going to charge them a\n little bit of a lower rate than in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ng was in Halifax in\n the morning where she announced some help for companies so they can \nexport their product. The announcement was for $425,000 to the Halifax \nChamber of Commerce in collaboration with N.S. Business Inc. to assist \nwith a program called Trade Accelerated Program (TAP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTAP helps \nbusinesses make a plan so they can export and grow into the \nInternational marketplace,\u201d said Ng. \u201cTrade agreements give Canadian \nbusinesses of all sizes access to customers. These agreements gives them\n 1.5 billion customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to help our businesses know how \nand where to grow and give them the supports they need so they can grow,\n and by growing they\u2019re creating jobs right here in N.S.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She spoke about getting more women in business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\n am working with the mandate to double the amount of women entrepreneurs\n in Canada,\u201d said Ng. \u201cWe\u2019re investing in them by helping them grow \ntheir women-owned businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Samson said more than one million \njobs have been created in the past three years, and the unemployment \nrate has dropped to lowest in Canada\u2019s history during the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\n government helping to create the conditions for job creation, but it\u2019s \nthe businesses themselves that are creating these jobs,\u201d said Samson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ng said the Maritimes have some of the most incredible small businesses she\u2019s seen anywhere in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\n are also inclusive so you have some great women entrepreneurs as well \nas Indigenous entrepreneurs, and it\u2019s fantastic,\u201d said Ng. \u201cWhat we can \ndo to create the right environment, to make the right investments to \nhelp our businesses be competitive to grow and create great jobs is what\n we\u2019re aiming to do.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FALL RIVER: The small businesses of the country are what helps to drive the Canadian economy, said the Minister for Small Business and Export Promotion during a quick stop in Fall River.
