{"id":12364,"date":"2019-09-04T02:00:33","date_gmt":"2019-09-04T05:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=12364"},"modified":"2019-09-04T02:00:33","modified_gmt":"2019-09-04T05:00:33","slug":"russell-spence-grant-mackenzie-strike-national-gold-for-cheema","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=12364","title":{"rendered":"Russell, Spence, Grant, MacKenzie strike national gold for Cheema"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><strong><em>Athletes bring home 19 medals, including six gold, from Canoe-Kayak Sprint nationals<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WAVERLEY: <\/strong>Cheema\n showed it\u2019s power on the canoe-kayak national scene last week, bringing\n home 19 medals from the national championship held in Regina, Sk. from \nAug. 27-Sept. 1, including six gold medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle Russell won \nthree gold, Sloan MacKenzie of Windsor Junction won two gold, teaming \nwith Jacy Grant on one of those golds; and Craig Spence also snagged a \ngold medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russell, of Fall River, snagged golds in the K1, 1,000 metre senior women\u2019s class; K1, 500 metres and K1, 200 metres race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that last race, Russell broke a long-standing timing record in the  Senior Women\u2019s K1 200m by 0.23 seconds\u2014a record that stood since 1994.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/69893603_374726523217951_2762673666599682048_n-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12366\"\/><figcaption>Craig Spence (Submitted photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Spence\n won gold in the C1, 1, 000 metre senior men\u2019s race, while MacKenzie of \nFall River earned gold in the C1, 200 metre junior women\u2019s race. She \nteamed with Jacy Grant to capture gold in the C2, 200 metre Under-18 \nwomen\u2019s class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also earned a silver in the C1 500-metres, and was the cox for the C15 200 metre U18 mix silver medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marshall\n Hughes (K1, 1,000 metre); MacKenzie (C1, 200 metre U18); Mike Kerrivan \nas cox in the C15, 500 metres junior women\u2019s; Kady Leard and Laura \nMacKinnon in the junior women\u2019s K2, 500 metres; and the team of Grant; \nMadeline Smith; Bailey Gray; and Lindsay Murray in the K4, 500 metres \nU-16 girls all claimed silver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hughes (K1, 200 metres); MacKenzie \n(C1, 500 metres U18); MacKinnon and Riley Melanson (K2, 1,000 metres \njunior womens); Bailey Gray and Jenna MacKay (C2, 1,000 metres junior \nwomen\u2019s); Grant and Murray (C2, 500 metres in U16); and Sam Amirault; \nKai Levy; Callum Wheatley; and Keaton Brown (K4, 500 metres in U16 boys)\n all grabbed bronze medals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 6,000 metre race, Jacy Grant \nbrought home a bronze medal finish in C1.
