{"id":12553,"date":"2019-10-13T14:30:09","date_gmt":"2019-10-13T17:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=12553"},"modified":"2019-10-13T14:30:09","modified_gmt":"2019-10-13T17:30:09","slug":"beaver-bank-buzzin-about-bees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=12553","title":{"rendered":"Beaver Bank buzzin&#8217; about bees"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>BEAVER BANK: <\/strong>There\u2019s some buzzing going on throughout the Beaver Bank community over it\u2019s newest residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\n a partnership between the volunteers at the Beaver Bank Country \nGardens, located across from the Beaver Bank Kinsac Community Centre; \nBEEA Honey with Heart; and Our Community Market, bees have found a new \nhome in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201d<\/strong>Bees are nature\u2019s perfect\n little farmers,\u201d said Roberta Hibbert, with Our Community Market. \u201cThey\n help keep gardens healthy for a more plentiful harvest as they assist \nwith pollination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis has been a collaborative effect to launch this project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/043-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12556\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Hibbert\n said the beekeeping by the youth will be educational for the youth, \nwhile assisting in the garden as they build a social enterprise in the \ncommunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BEEA honey will also be available at the Halifax \nSeaport Market. The money generated will be managed by the Youth \nExecutive Committee as part of their entrepreneurship experience within \nthe program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hibbert was introduced to the social enterprise \nproject by Kim Drisdelle, who is the school-based Program coordinator \nwith BEEA Honey with Heart in Halifax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey had funding available  and were looking for a community garden within HRM that would host this  project and after introducing them to Beaver Bank Country Garden, it  was a very positive response to start the process,\u201d said Hibbert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/047-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12557\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The\n BEEA Youth Executive Committee is open to youth between the ages of \n12-17 to learn about building a social enterprise. They will be \nresponsible to conduct the hive checks and document their findings to \nkeep each hive healthy. They will bottle and market the harvest from \nstart to finish. There is no cost to get involved and all equipment will\n be supplied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI believe this project will be something our \ncommunity youth will feel a sense of accomplishment that they will \nremember for a lifetime,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drisdelle was on hand on Oct. 2\n to install the first two hives of bees at the gardens location. She \nspoke about what it meant to have the hives in Beaver Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere  were two bee hives purchased in July and we brought them down here to  Beaver Bank so we can start a new beekeeping program here,\u201d she said.  \u201cIt\u2019s going to help the youth with their leadership, entrepreneurship  and business skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/032-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12555\"\/><figcaption>Kim Drisdelle and a Beaver Bank Community Garden volunteer checks out the bees.
