Home “too structurally damaged” for investigators to search for evidence of its cause <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

BEAVER BANK: <\/strong>A vacant house that caught fire on \nBeaver Bank Road, and closed a portion of the road due to the smoke from\n the fire Oct. 12, was too \u201cstructurally damaged to investigate to \ndetermine a cause\u201d fire officials say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., \nfirefighters from Station 48 (Beaver Bank); Quint 9 (Metropolitan \nSackville); Station 45 Fall River; Station 42 (Wellington); Station 41 \n(Waverley); Tanker 11 (Patton Road); Mount Uniacke fire; Station 10 \n(Lower Sackville); Station 50 (Hammonds Plains) all responded to the \nscene. HRM Fire\u2019s rehab unit and RCMP also attended. There were 43 \nfirefighters at the call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brendan Elliott, HRM spokesman, said that 911 received multiple callers on the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMost\n of the callers said the basement looked to be fully involved,\u201d said \nElliott on Oct. 15. \u201cWe were able to confirm the house was vacant and \nhad no power to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith that in mind, our firefighters took a \ndefensive position in fighting the fire, meaning there would be no \nfirefighters entering the home while fighting the fire.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to residents, the home had been abandoned for many years \nand had seen some issues around squatters using it as a home in the \npast. It had no water or power running to it at the present time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A post on Beaver Bank Community Watch\u2019s Facebook page said it was the old Lively homestead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HRM\n Fire asked RCMP to shut down a part of Beaver Bank Road because the \nthick smoke was drifting over the road, causing significant sight-line \nissues.Elliott said by 2:41 p.m. firefighters had mostly knocked down \nthe fire, and the roof was gone. At around 4:30 p.m. one of the lanes \nwas reopened on Beaver Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elliott said there were challenges fighting the blaze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf \nthere was any challenge to the fire it would have been ensuring the \ncoordination of the many tankers required to maintain water supply at \nthe scene,\u201d said Elliott. \u201cAlso, it was a hard fire to completely \nextinguish because firefighters could not enter the building to dig the \nfire out of the walls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 4:36 a.m. on Sunday, firefighters \nreturned to the scene for a flare up. Station 48 extinguished what \nrekindled and crews removed a section of wood that appeared to be the \nculprit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elliott said fire investigators were not able to \ninvestigate properly due to the roof collapse, thus it is labeled as \ncause undetermined.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
