{"id":12603,"date":"2019-10-18T11:59:36","date_gmt":"2019-10-18T14:59:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=12603"},"modified":"2019-10-18T11:59:36","modified_gmt":"2019-10-18T14:59:36","slug":"student-vote-wmes-students-cast-their-ballots-in-mock-federal-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=12603","title":{"rendered":"STUDENT VOTE: WMES students cast their ballots in mock federal election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>WAVERLEY: <\/strong>From\n the sounds of the voices in the lineup outside Waverley Memorial \nSchool\u2019s library, the students in Grade 4-5-6 that were taking part in \nStudent Vote 2019 were very engaged with the candidates running in \nSackville-Preston-Chezzetcook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Student Vote is an program operated  by CIVIX aimed at providing students the opportunity to experience the  voting process firsthand and practice the habits of active and informed  citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/089-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12610\"\/><figcaption>Ayden Christenson casts his ballot in Waverley Memorial School\u2019s Student Vote on Oct. 16. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At WMES, students cast their ballots on Oct. 16. \nOther students at Georges P. Vanier Junior high, for example, were \nvoting on Oct. 17 and Oct. 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Librarian Michelle Dey looked after\n both Student Votes at WMES and G.P. Vanier Junior High. She said the \nstudents at Waverley were excited to take part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dI hope the  students gain confidence sop when they reach 18 that they feel that they  can vote with ease,\u201d said Dey. \u201cThey can learn about it and be part of  it, and they will feel prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/073-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12609\"\/><figcaption>Grace Cameron tells the poll clerk her name to ensure she\u2019s on the voting list and will be checked off before receiving her ballot to vote in WMES Student Vote on Oct. 16. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kaden Sprague was helping out as\n a poll clerk. He said it was one of the many roles there are on \nElection Day, and one he was happy to be assigned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty \ncool to be involved in something that kids normally don\u2019t,\u201d he said. \u201cI \nused to think going to vote is scary, but now I don\u2019t think it is so \nmuch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Student Brianna Watson said she can\u2019t wait until she is 18 and can vote for real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis\n is something that only our parents get to do,\u201d said Watson. \u201cIt\u2019s hard \nto decide who to vote for but that\u2019s why we did a lot of reading about \nthe candidates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now speaking with students who got to vote, Ava \nManley said it was fun. She offered up that she voted for the Green \nParty\u2019s Anthony Edmonds, and explained why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like being a  parent and voting for a party you like,\u201d said Manley. \u201cThe Greens are  doing a lot of things for the Earth and garbage, and a lot of other good  things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/148-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12613\"\/><figcaption>Sam Cameron casts his ballot. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Edmonds and the Green Party was also the choice of Falon Lane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re helping people with the environment and making our planet safer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dey\n said it\u2019s good to get them engaged at this age. The students viewed a \nvideo sent by CIVIX, and were given a bit of background on the local \ncandidates in Sackville-Preston-Chezzetcook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJust going through  the process will allow it to be something familiar, they\u2019ll recognize it  when they can vote,\u201d she said. \u201cIt also gets them talking about the  political party\u2019s, people that represent us, democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Results of the voting was scheduled to be released by CIVIX following the closure of the polls in B.C. on Election Day, Oct. 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/041-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12614\"\/><figcaption>Jane Langille makes sure her ballot gets in the box for WMES Student Vote.
