{"id":12627,"date":"2019-10-22T01:52:47","date_gmt":"2019-10-22T04:52:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=12627"},"modified":"2019-10-22T01:52:47","modified_gmt":"2019-10-22T04:52:47","slug":"samson-credits-re-election-victory-to-constituents-teams-hard-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=12627","title":{"rendered":"Samson credits re-election victory to constituents, team\u2019s hard work"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>WAVERLEY:<\/strong> \u201cThis victory tonight is not mine, it is \nthe people\u2019s of Sackville-Preston-Chezzetcook,\u201d said a relieved and \njubilant Darrell Samson to a room of about 50 supporters at the Waverley\n Legion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Samson was re-elected to represent the riding, defeating \nNDP Matt Stickland by almost 8,000 votes in the Oct. 21 federal \nelection. Samson had a total of 19,667 votes compared to Stickland\u2019s \n11,665. Conservative Kevin Copley was third; Green Party\u2019s Anthony \nEdmonds was fourth and the People\u2019s Party Sybil Hogg was last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He  will be one of 156 Liberal MPs predicted to form a minority government  under Justin Trudeau. Results were still coming in as of 1 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/099-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12629\"\/><figcaption>Darrell Samson gets a hug of staff member Melanie Roy after he arrived at the Waverley Legion following his victory in the Oct. 21 election. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In  the leadup to the election, a variety of polls indicated the riding was  a toss up between Stickland and Samson. But as each poll came in on  Monday night, it became clear quite early that those polls didn\u2019t have  the actual vibe of the constituency as Samson easily took a large lead  and never looked back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Darrell Samson arrives at victory party\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-emdTDsS7T4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When Samson was declared re-elected, the \nroom at the Waverley Legion\u2014which at that point may have had about 25 \npeople, including seven media and two Legion employees\u2014there was much \nrelief and a short eruption of euphoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He spoke to the crowd about the victory and what it meant to represent the riding for the last four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\n had the honour and privilege of representing the people of this \nconstituency,\u201d said Samson, looking visibly relieved from the campaign \njourney that culminated with the win. \u201cThis constituency has been heard,\n but it must be heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen monies get moved around in this  country it usually gets moved to Quebec, Ontario, B.C. Our jobs as MPs  in N.S. is to ensure the truck full of money, supports and services are  for the people of Nova Scotia. But don\u2019t get me wrong. My objective is  your objective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/090-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12628\"\/><figcaption>Gabe Benavent congratulates Darrell Samson on his victory in the Oct. 21 federal election. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He said his objective is to ensure a good portion of that money doesn\u2019t just land in Halifax, but comes to the riding as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Samson talked about the long days of campaigning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\n have to admit there were days that it was tough out there, but we \nworked hard,\u201d: he said. \u201cWe took absolutely nothing for granted. We knew\n that we needed to have those important conversations at the door, about\n seniors; young families; young adults; about the middle class; about \nall Canadians; the challenges in health; the challenges in education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is time for our government , for the federal government to act, and we shall do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/125-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12630\"\/><figcaption>MP Darrell Samson speaks to the crowd at the Waverley Legion for his victory party.
