RCMP seeing uptick in reports of online scams province-wide"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>DARTMOUTH<\/strong>: Nova Scotia RCMP\u00a0has\u00a0recently\u00a0received many\u00a0reports of online scams and wants to help the public protect themselves.<br \/> <br \/> Some of the scams involve\u00a0fraudsters meeting victims online and asking for money. Often, scammers spend time communicating with the victim and establishing a bond before\u00a0asking for bitcoin and\/or gift cards. <br \/> <br \/> Another\u00a0scam involves fraudsters posting an ad for an item online and asking for a deposit or down-payment before the item is picked up.\u00a0Once money is received, the fraudster\u00a0removes the ad and stops communicating with the victim.<br \/> <br \/> Police are reminding the public to protect themselves against frauds in the following ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Do not send money, gift cards, Bitcoin or anything\nelse of value to someone you&#8217;ve never met in-person. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Before sending money to an online seller, make sure\nyou see the item in-person. It is risky to put a deposit or down-payment on\nsomething you have never seen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If you have a feeling that something is not&nbsp;right,\nit is best to trust your gut and stop communicating with that person.<br \/>\nScammers can be very persistent and convincing. Being defrauded is never the\nvictim&#8217;s fault. If you have been defrauded, you are not alone.
