{"id":12657,"date":"2019-10-26T10:30:31","date_gmt":"2019-10-26T13:30:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=12657"},"modified":"2019-10-26T10:30:31","modified_gmt":"2019-10-26T13:30:31","slug":"lhs-students-elect-greens-to-govern-liberals-as-opposition-in-mock-format","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=12657","title":{"rendered":"LHS students elect Greens to govern; Liberals as opposition in mock format"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>FALL RIVER:<\/strong>\n Students at Lockview High School in Fall River had their own say as \npart of a mock election in the lead-up to the Oct. 21 federal \nelection\u2014only their wasn\u2019t part of Student Vote, like other schools in \nthe areas were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the vote at LHS, the Green Party led by \nElizabeth May won the right to form government, while Justin Trudeau and\n the Liberals would be the Official Opposition. Meanwhile, Jagmeet Singh\n and the NDP had the third most seats; Andrew Scheer\u2019s Conservative\u2019s \nfinished with the fourth most seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The People\u2019s Party of Canada, under leader Maxime Bernier, did not win any seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jason\n Balcom teaches Global Politics 12 this semester and had four out of \nfive invited candidates come and speak to his class. The \nSackville-Preston-Chezzetcook candidates for the Liberals (Darrell \nSamson); Anthony Edmonds (Green Party); Sybil Hogg (People\u2019s Party); and\n Matt Stickland (NDP) visited the class. Conservative Kevin Copley did \nnot attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe decided to take the mock election a step further \nand predict a government and opposition as well as popular vote,\u201d said \nBalcom. \u201cEach homeroom became a riding and each homeroom elected a \ncandidate from the five parties running in this riding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the students had to do their own research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe homeroom teacher showed a slide on how voting worked and then the kids balloted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Balcom\n explained the result was probably from the kids having heard about the \nGreen Party and not knowing a whole lot about the other parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was good practice to demonstrate how a government was elected,\u201d said Balcom.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FALL RIVER: Students at Lockview High School in Fall River had their own say as part of a mock election in the lead-up to the Oct. 21 federal election\u2014only their wasn\u2019t part of Student Vote, like other schools in the areas were.
