{"id":12689,"date":"2019-10-28T14:00:55","date_gmt":"2019-10-28T17:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=12689"},"modified":"2019-10-28T14:00:55","modified_gmt":"2019-10-28T17:00:55","slug":"community-consulted-on-oakfield-park-bridge-replacement-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=12689","title":{"rendered":"Community consulted on Oakfield Park bridge replacement project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>OAKFIELD: <\/strong>The  community of Oakfield had it\u2019s first look at plans from Nova Scotia\u2019s  Department of Transportation and Infrastructure and Renewal (NSTIR) to  replace the Oakfield Park bridge, beginning in a year-and-a-half\u2019s time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At\n the community consultation on Oct. 22 at St. Margaret\u2019s Church in \nOakfield, residents saw the plans that were placed in a couple of spots \nin the church and plans that were laid out on a table at the back of the\n church for the new bridge, which will cost approximately $2 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The  current bridge is a single-lane, 31 metre span built with steel truss  which crosses over a CN Rail line. The new bridge structure will be two  lane, single span (25 metre) of poured concrete grinders, with a steel  reinforced deck bridge and sidewalk that will have a steel bridge  railing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_3568-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12692\"\/><figcaption>Residents get a look at the design of the Oakfield Park Road bridge, which is set for replacement beginning in spring\/summer 2021, and take six to nine month to complete. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While residents welcome the bridge being replaced, with \nmany saying it\u2019s long overdue, a few voiced concerns with the new design\n opening a can of worms to non-stop speeding, which is a current issue \ndespite the one lane bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s ugly; it needs to be steel and not concrete,\u201d said a long-time resident who wished her name not be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The  woman feared with a concrete bridge that something similar to what  happened at a bridge in Montreal that was newly built and made of  concrete would happen to the Oakfield Park bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_3538-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12690\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to \ninformation in a handout of the bridge replacement project, a portion of\n Meadowvale Lane will see a change in vertical alignment to connect with\n Oakfield Park Road. The new bridge will be constructed on a new \nalignment north of the existing structure running skew to the rail line.\n A portion of the current road will be eliminated on either side and \nlikely access blocked once the new bridge is complete and in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\n existing road and bridge will remain open throughout construction,\u201d \nsaid NS TIR representative Matt Clarke, who was among three TIR \nofficials on-0hand to answer questions. \u201cThe old bridge will only be \nremoved upon completion of the new structure and traffic can be moved \nonto the new bridge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said TIR is currently working with CN to acquire the necessary permits to complete the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere will be a few utility poles that will require they be moved as well in order to finish the construction,\u201d said Clarke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_3558-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12691\"\/><figcaption>A resident gets a look at the design of the Oakfield Park Road bridge, which is set for replacement beginning in spring\/summer 2021, and take six to nine month to complete.
