{"id":12758,"date":"2019-11-05T11:00:05","date_gmt":"2019-11-05T15:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=12758"},"modified":"2019-11-05T11:00:05","modified_gmt":"2019-11-05T15:00:05","slug":"made-in-fall-river-earth-remote-sensing-data-being-tracked-by-telescope-built-by-locals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=12758","title":{"rendered":"Made in Fall River: Earth remote sensing data being tracked by telescope built by locals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>FALL RIVER:<\/strong>\n Situated inside the garage of Bob Allan\u2019s Fall River home is something \nthat is about to play an important role in receiving data as it relates \nto the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allan and Paul Adlakha, with C-CORE, have built an \nOptical Ground Station for remote sensing satellites, which is set to be\n shipped off to Toronto this week. To many it looks like just an overly \nlarge telescope. For Allan and Adlakha it\u2019s more than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cC-CORE\n has a project with Sinclair Interplanetary out of Toronto, they\u2019re \nbuilding space segments,\u201d said Adlakha. \u201cThey put their laser technology\n on satellites and beam down the sensor data. We\u2019re building the ground \nsegment to capture that data.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese satellites are all about imaging the earth, measuring properties of the earth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_4185-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12761\"\/><figcaption>The telescope out for a demonstration at Bob Allan\u2019s residence in Fall River Village before being packed away for shipping to Toronto. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The\n purpose of the station is it can track satellites that have data as it \nrelates to the earth and retrieve that for those on the ground here to \ndisseminate and analyze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bulk of the work was done by Allan at\n his home, which is located on a cul-de-sac in Fall River Village. \nAdlakha happens to live nearby Allan so the two are practically \nneighbors, while living on separate streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s integrated the  telescope, the mount, and doing a bunch of testing starting with a  smaller telescope, to this which is a 24 inch telescope,\u201d he said. \u201cIt  will track satellites in space and collect the data from it. It\u2019s been  working extremely well and now it\u2019s time for it to be shipped off to  Toronto for operational use.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Optical station telescope demonstrated\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cus6BNj24F4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>A video of the station being demonstrated.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Allan\u2019s company, Nova-Consult, contracts his technical services out in building these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What has been built at Sinclair and here is, according to Adlakha \u201cworld-leading.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis\n is one-way communication, you don\u2019t have to have a beacon on here \npointing to the sky,\u201d he explained. \u201cThe satellite will transmit down \nand this will track it, so it\u2019s way safer then having a laser pointing \nup into the sky. He has been an independent consultant since about 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s  a great big toy for looking at stars, which is what most of that  equipment is used for,\u201d said Allan when asked about how it felt to be  part of this. \u201d This is different application of the same technology  that astronomers use.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/20190925_112915-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12759\"\/><figcaption>A photo of Sinclair Interplanetary\u2019s building in downtown Toronto where the optical ground station is going. (Submitted photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He said all they did was add the stuff from\n Sinclair for the down-link and it becomes quite a special piece of \nequipment. The satellite data collected is earth-sensitive, making \nmeasurements of the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is free space optical \ncommunications which has been a dream for a long time and a technology \nthat\u2019s from space is just materializing.
