{"id":12767,"date":"2019-11-05T22:02:34","date_gmt":"2019-11-06T02:02:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=12767"},"modified":"2019-11-05T22:02:34","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T02:02:34","slug":"edmonds-thanks-may-for-her-dedication-no-interest-in-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=12767","title":{"rendered":"Edmonds thanks May for her dedication; no interest in leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>WELLINGTON: <\/strong>News\n that Green Party Leader Elizabeth May is stepping down immediately as \nleader of the party didn\u2019t come as a surprise to the local Green member \nin Sackville-Preston-Chezzetcook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anthony Edmonds told <em>The Laker <\/em>from\n his Wellington home May had spoken extensively about succession in the \npast, and she has indicated publicly on more than one occasion that she \nfelt she was nearing the end of her time as leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRecently, she\n even said that she did not intend to lead the party into the next \nelection,\u201d said Edmonds. \u201cConsequently, the only surprise was the \ntiming. By choosing to step down immediately, she is providing as much \ntime as possible to find good candidates, hold a thorough leadership \ncampaign, and allow the next leader to grow into the role and build a \nname.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Edmonds continued, saying as always, May is putting her \nduties as leader ahead of her own personal ambitions, which is why she \nwill be leaving very large shoes to fill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRegardless, I know \nthere is plenty of talent and leadership within the party, so I have no \ndoubt that we will find another fantastic leader,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He wanted to offer a debt of gratitude and thanks, from all Canadians, to May for her \u201cselfless dedication.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHer time as leader has been a tremendous service to the Green movement and to Canada,\u201d said Edmonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Edmonds was asked if he had any aspirations to become the leader of the parity. He said he does not at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy\n heart is more in provincial politics, so my attention is currently \ndirected towards preparing for the next provincial election,\u201d said \nEdmonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked what it means that Halifax-area Green Party MP \nJo-Ann Roberts will be the interim leader, Edmonds thought it was \nnatural for one of the deputy leaders to step in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy volunteering\n for that role, Jo-Ann Roberts may be ruling out a bid for the \nleadership contest,\u201d said Edmonds. \u201cStill, I\u2019m hopeful that we will see \nquality leadership contestants from this coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMeanwhile, we may enjoy slightly easier access to our interim leader here in the Halifax area.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WELLINGTON: News that Green Party Leader Elizabeth May is stepping down immediately as leader of the party didn\u2019t come as a surprise to the local Green member in Sackville-Preston-Chezzetcook.
