{"id":12782,"date":"2019-11-06T11:00:35","date_gmt":"2019-11-06T15:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=12782"},"modified":"2019-11-06T11:00:35","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T15:00:35","slug":"halifax-sar-volunteers-legacy-to-live-on-with-rescue-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=12782","title":{"rendered":"Halifax SAR volunteers legacy to live on with Rescue One"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>LAKEVIEW: <\/strong>The  legacy of the late Carmen Eisan will continue to live on at Halifax  Search and Rescue (HSAR) in the form of a new piece of equipment  to help the volunteer searchers be more effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under blue \nsunny skies outside their headquarters on Lakeview Road in Lakeview on \nNov. 2, GSAR officially welcomed \u201cRescue One\u201d, or as the plate on the \nfront of it aptly indicated \u201cCarmen\u201d to their fleet. The welcoming of \nthe vehicle was part of an open house celebration the organization held.\n Eisan willed funds to the fundraising efforts of the new $150,000 \napparatus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur research shows that there is an upward trend in remote rescues,\u201d said HSAR Chief Director  Kara Baisley.  \u201cRolling the large logistics trucks to a remote rescue is unwarranted  and cost effective. The evolution of the calls means we can deploy a  small manoeuvrable vehicle with fewer searchers involved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/201-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12783\"\/><figcaption>HSAR Chief Director Kara Baisley speaks during the unveiling celebration of Rescue One at the organization\u2019s headquarters in Lakeview. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The truck was designed specifically to aid in the number of remote rescue calls that come in to dispatch for HSAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRescue\n One is completely funded by the hard work of our members, the \ngenerosity of our communities and the great partnerships we have with \nour fundraisers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two of the largest fundraisers for the \norganization were the Eco-Endurance challenge in Goffs area and Haunted \nHollow, said Baisley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose two events brought in the capital funds that went towards the new truck\u2019s purchase,\u201d she said to the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before  the celebration got into speeches from special dignitaries, Rescue One  was smudged in during a special ceremony by local Mi\u2019kmaq  representatives who were on hand. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Eisan\u2019s donation  allowed the group to go from a standard pickup truck to the Remote  Rescue truck they unveiled. She had volunteered with both East Hants  GSAR and Halifax SAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe remains a supporter even after she has past,\u201d said Baisley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\n gift from 100 Women Who Care Halifax allows them to fully equip it with\n specially designed remote rescue first aid gear and hypothermia packs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll  of the equipment required is fully air transportable meaning we can get  to people by land, air, or water in the fastest manner possible,\u201d said  Baisley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/310-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12786\"\/><figcaption>Halifax District RCMP S\/Sgt. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Halifax District RCMP S\/Sgt Dwayne Kelly said the day \nwasn\u2019t about the vehicle, but the symbolism that Rescue One \nrepresents\u2014the thousands of hours that GSAR in N.S. and HRM gives to the\n community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen first hand through various opportunities \nthat the 160 members of Halifax Search and Rescue bring to the safety of\n Nova Scotians and that of those in HRM,\u201d said S\/Sgt.
