{"id":12864,"date":"2019-11-19T12:09:12","date_gmt":"2019-11-19T16:09:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=12864"},"modified":"2019-11-19T12:09:12","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T16:09:12","slug":"sportsmanship-shines-as-dragons-play-winnipeg-boys-hockey-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=12864","title":{"rendered":"Sportsmanship shines as Dragons play Winnipeg boys hockey team"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>LANTZ: <\/strong>The\n Oak Park Raiders from Winnipeg may have been disappointed that their \ntrip to a hockey tournament in Halifax ended sooner than they wanted. \nBut the face of disappointment quickly changed to one of appreciation \nand gratitude 12 hours later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After being eliminated early from  the McNeil Motors hockey tournament, hosted by Auburn High, the  Raiders\u20143,500 miles from home\u2014found themselves with nothing to do until  their flight home on Nov. 18. So they became tourists, and took a trip  to Peggy\u2019s Cove, all the while another coach was putting feelers out to  the Lockview High Dragons to see if they wished to have a game on Sunday  afternoon Nov. 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/241-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12873\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And within 12 hours, the East Coast Rumble was\n born, complete with a championship banner, signed by all the Dragons, \nand hockey pucks as keepsakes for each of the Raiders players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThings\n didn\u2019t turnout how we wanted in the tournament and we ended it very \nearly,\u201d said head coach Ian MacDonald. \u201cWe had a couple of extra days in\n N.S., and because of that one of our parents took it upon themselves to\n contact Lockview and arrange this game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MacDonald said the gesture set the mood as the team heads back for the remainder of their season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe  couldn\u2019t have asked for a better experience,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was just a  complete class act. We\u2019re thrilled to have been part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/066-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12866\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Raiders team captain Ethan Berezowski said the game was a fun one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\n was a little bit of practice, a little extra hockey so we can bring it \nback to Winnipeg,\u201d he said. \u201cI was amazed they made a custom banner, \ncustom pucks, they went all out. It\u2019s just wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team visited Peggy\u2019s Cove, which they found to be very beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely unbelievable,\u201d he said, adding they will be back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/027-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12865\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lockview head coach Todd Allison said the team within the team is how they were able to pull it off and make the game happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\n put all this together because of parent help,\u201d he said. \u201cThe East Hants\n Sportsplex was wonderful as they came through with the extra hour ice \ntime. They made it as much of a game as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allison said the Raiders were bummed their tournament play concluded so soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think we changed that disappointment for them with having this game,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/145-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12869\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He\n said he received an email detailing the situation, and after a couple \nof phone calls the game was arranged and scheduled. It\u2019s normally their \nregular practice time of an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allison said he believes the game made the trip for the Raiders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI  really think we changed their outlook ,\u201d said Allison. \u201cThey got more  than they were expecting when they came here. Everyone hears what  Maritimers are like, and the way we like to give. I think they were left  thinking they had definitely made the right choice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/179-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12870\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The \nspecially designed banner and pucks were presented to the Oak Park squad\n after the game was finished, which the Manitoba team won 6-3.
