{"id":13092,"date":"2019-12-16T09:46:46","date_gmt":"2019-12-16T13:46:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=13092"},"modified":"2019-12-16T09:46:46","modified_gmt":"2019-12-16T13:46:46","slug":"windsor-junction-home-extensively-damaged-by-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=13092","title":{"rendered":"Windsor Junction home \u201cextensively damaged\u201d by fire"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>WINDSOR JUNCTION: <\/strong>A\n fire that left a home in Windsor Junction \u201cextensively damaged\u201d could \nhave spread to nearby homes if it hadn\u2019t been caught as fast as it was, \nthanks to the quick action of a passing motorist who was first to spot \nthe flames and call 911.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vivian Collier, her husband Paul and \ndaughter Sarah were on Windsor Junction Road at approximately 5:30 p.m. \nheading to Mount Uniacke where Sarah\u2019s cadets corp was holding a \nChristmas mess dinner. Collier thought it looked foggy out despite it \npouring rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPaul said it smelled like smoke and then Sarah spotted the house by the entryway to the WJCC was on fire,\u201d said Collier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_0976-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13095\"\/><figcaption>Fire investigators were on scene for most of the day Dec. 15 looking into what may have caused a fire that left the home behind the truck extensively damaged. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The family pulled off at Expressions of Wood, across the road from Community Centre Lane, and immediately called 911. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPaul\n was out directing people to keep moving in their cars, and the back of \nthe house was lit up,\u201d she said . \u201cThe amount of heat coming from it you\n could feel from across the street and through the rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\n definitely was directly outside but not directly on the ground. The \nsparks from the fire looked like soft wood, how it sorta pops when it \nburns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was left wondering how the flames could get so big and hot with the downpour of rain that was happening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collier\n stayed on the line with 911 until the operator said it was okay to let \nher go. They tried to help keep people at bay while at the scene as \nemergency crews responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe  tried to keep people back as much as we could,\u201d she said. \u201cOnce the  fire trucks were in sight we carried on our way to Mt. Uniacke.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_0967-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13094\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Lloyd\n Currie, District chief for District 3 with Halifax Fire, said \nfirefighters from Quint 9 (Metropolitan Ave. Sackville); Station 10 \n(Lower Sackville); Station 45 (Fall River); Station 43 (Grand Lake); \nStation 42 (Wellington); Station 41 (Waverley); and Tac 48 (Beaver Bank)\n responded to the call<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201d<\/strong>Upon\n arrival there was heavy fire on the back side of the house,\u201d said \nCurrie on Saturday night, Dec. 14. \u201cThe first arriving crews deployed a \nline to the rear of the structure and applied water to the exterior \nknocking it down relatively quick.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said while that was happening other fire crews made their way inside to check for extension and obtain all clears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey found fire in the attic which they extinguished,\u201d he said. \u201cThe house is extensively damaged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currie said there was no injuries and no one was home at the time of fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fire\n investigators were on scene for most of the day on Sunday Dec. 15 \ninvestigating.
