Lakeview couple handing over the reigns to community food drive after 25 years <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LAKEVIEW: <\/strong>A\n couple from Lakeview are passing on the community\u2019s food drive torch \nonto a new family, 25 years after starting it as a way to honour a \nfamily member that had passed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1994, Raymond and Joanne \nKelly-Dwinell began a community food drive in honour of Joanne\u2019s sister \nRuth Ann who passed away because of cancer. In that time frame it has \nhelped out many in the communities of Lakeview, Windsor Junction, \nWaverley, Fall River, and Wellington through the Lions Christmas \nExpress. In that time, Joanne\u2019s mom also died of cancer, so it became a \nfood drive in memory of both women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The food drive sees children \nin the community, accompanied by one of the adults, go door-to-door \nseeking food donations for the Christmas Express. It would then be \nbrought to the Dwinell\u2019s home. It would be there that volunteers with \nthe Christmas Express would pick it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does it mean to the couple to have done the food drive for 25 years?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt means we did our part to honour Ruth Ann,\u201d said Raymond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth Ann was described as a very generous soul who was the nicest person in the world, said Raymond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe would do anything to help anybody,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joanne was all smiles seeing past children who are now adults continuing to help out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s\n really nice to see the kids that were small and helping out, are now \nbig and they are part of the community and carrying it on,\u201d she said. \n\u201cIt\u2019s so wonderful to see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two said they didn\u2019t do the food drive for any accolades, but to help out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m\n surprised this happened today because I don\u2019t like being the center of \nattention,\u201d she said. \u201cWe just did it in her honour.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is more than I ever expected, this type of recognition. We\u2019re not used to it,\u201d added Joanne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The couple were recognized with certificate of appreciations from Darrell Samson, read by Geoff Reagan on Samson\u2019s behalf; Bill Horne MLA; HRM Mayor Mike Savage; the Lakeview Homeowners Association; and Lions Christmas Express. Horne and Samson also were making donations in honour of the food drive to the Christmas Express.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stephanie Dube, with the Lions Christmas Express, said what the two have done over the past two-plus decades was amazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis\n year, the donations from the Lakeview community, like other years, is \njust phenomenal,\u201d said Dube. \u201cI think they know how much their support \nand doing the food drive means.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
