{"id":13415,"date":"2020-03-05T04:16:44","date_gmt":"2020-03-05T08:16:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=13415"},"modified":"2020-03-05T04:16:44","modified_gmt":"2020-03-05T08:16:44","slug":"marshall-brings-positivity-to-aus-champion-upei-panthers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=13415","title":{"rendered":"Marshall brings positivity to AUS Champion UPEI Panthers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> Ashleigh Marshall might only be in her rookie season\nwith the recently crowned Atlantic University Sport (AUS) women\u2019s basketball\nchampion UPEI Panthers, but she\u2019s played a key role in the team\u2019s success to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lockview High\nalum has earned praise from her head coach, Matt Gamblin, for being part of the\nteam whether that\u2019s contributing on the court when called upon to take some of\nthe load off the team\u2019s other players or simply by being a supportive teammate\ncheering her teammates along from the bench, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAshleigh\u2019s positive energy is a big boost to the whole group,\u201d said Gamblin after the team\u2019s semifinal win over UNB Reds on Feb. 29 at Scotiabank Centre. \u201cShe\u2019s a happy-go-lucky kid who\u2019s always ready to play, but also just brings a lot of positive energy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;36&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_5249.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13419\"\/><figcaption>Ashleigh Marshall finishes warmup for the second half at the AUS Championships in Halifax. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Marshall\u2019s former coach\nat Lockview High, Lori Lancaster, is a UPEI alum so there\u2019s a connection\nbetween the Dragons and UPEI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great Fall River\/UPEI connection that we\u2019re happy about,\u201d Gamblin said with a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the season,\nMarshall played 112 minutes over 18 games, or an average of six plus minutes a\ngame, recording 18 points. She was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Marshall may\nnot have saw the court during the Panthers semifinal and championship final,\nthe Fall River native could be seen pumping her fellow teammates out and high\nfiving them when they came to the bench for a substitution or timeout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the final\nseconds ticked off the Panthers 78-59 championship win over Acadia, Marshall\nwas grabbing onto teammates on the bench ready to burst onto the court in\ncelebration of the team\u2019s first championship in 22 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The smile on her face as the team posed for photos with the banner, trophy and then took pics of each other with the banner was proof enough that she understood her role and was happy to do her part cheering her teammates on while being ready if tabbed to take to the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_5119.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13416\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For Gamblin, it\u2019s\nall about getting the experience for Marshall and other rookies on the team,\nwhich graduates just one player of the AUS championship winning roster this\nyear. In other words, it will be a force for years to come as it\u2019s built for\nlong-term success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s done a\ngreat job this year. She knows her role,\u201d said Gamblin, who has known her since\nshe was 15. \u201cSeeing Ashleigh develop has been good and being able to be part of\nthat has been nice. \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marshall and the Panthers captured bronze at the USports national championship in Ottawa, rallying from an 12-point halftime deficit to earn the victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_5195.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13418\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_5174.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13417\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the game marked the end of Beaver Bank\u2019s Kelsey Rice\u2019s career as an Acadia Axewomen. She had battled concussion issues and other injuries to make it back on court for this season with the Len Harvey-coached squad.
