{"id":13988,"date":"2020-04-07T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-07T18:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=13988"},"modified":"2020-04-07T15:30:00","modified_gmt":"2020-04-07T18:30:00","slug":"keeping-their-minds-active-fletchers-lake-boys-getting-slimey-making-video-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=13988","title":{"rendered":"Keeping their minds active: Fletchers Lake boys getting &#8220;slimey&#8221; making video game"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>FLETCHERS LAKE:<\/strong> &nbsp;Two young boys from Fletchers Lake have found a creative way to keep their minds thinking while schools out due to the State of Emergency as a result of COVID19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rowan Williamson and Austin Wright, who both attend Grade 6 in Holland Road School in Fletchers Lake, have been busy working on making a video game they hope to have available for others to play it shortly. The game is called \u201cInfectious Slime\u201d.&nbsp; The two youngsters are collaborating over FaceTime video and email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;47&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/92018213_202896661157527_282851908866015232_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14004\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Austin is the graphics designer for the game, while Rowan is the one piecing it together with the computer code. &nbsp;Both have been busy testing and testing it to ensure it works. They have had some hiccups in building the game, like anything with technology it\u2019s bound to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe play a lot of video games,\u201d said Austin, who admitted he\u2019s learning as he goes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe combined our favourite games and put them in one,\u201d added Rowan, who\u2019s favourite video game is Minecraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rowan said a game called Terraria, was some of his inspiration for the game, and for Austin it was Flame Ranger and Mario Bros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why decided the game would be called Infectious Slime,\u201d said Austin, 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The game starts off with the user being a little slime, and you can collect coins and there will be enemies that are red. It\u2019s like Mario Bros. game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rowan took coding through a program called \u2018Code Ninjas.\u2019 He explained why he took the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have always wanted to be able to code and do a video game,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s where you learn how to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two said building the video game has made the time pass by quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s making the time go by fast because it\u2019s so time consuming,\u201d the two said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both said the COVID19 pandemic is the right time to create it; if there was school, they wouldn\u2019t have the time to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Austin said the video game will be available to play on computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not sure about tablets and phones just yet, but we might be able to do that,\u201d said Austin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rowan, 11, said it\u2019s been super fun to create the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of stressful sometimes because I\u2019ve had the title screen of the game delete two times and I had to rebuild it,\u201d he said. \u201cI also had the slime do an issue, and when I came back the file wouldn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two hope this leads to more games in their future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe just did this game for fun and want to see how it turns out,\u201d said Rowan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to make more games because it\u2019s so fun,\u201d added Austin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;6&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;7&#8243;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FLETCHERS LAKE: &nbsp;Two young boys from Fletchers Lake have found a creative way to keep their minds thinking while schools out due to the State of Emergency as a result of COVID19.
