{"id":14125,"date":"2020-04-17T14:36:06","date_gmt":"2020-04-17T17:36:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=14125"},"modified":"2020-04-17T14:36:06","modified_gmt":"2020-04-17T17:36:06","slug":"blackburn-streatch-considering-what-they-can-do-to-help-out-during-covid19-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=14125","title":{"rendered":"Blackburn, Streatch considering what they can do to help out during COVID19 pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>Both applaud Mayor Savage for leadership in taking <\/em><\/strong><em><strong>20 per cent salary cut<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F<strong>ALL RIVER\/BEAVER BANK:<\/strong> Two local HRM councillors are considering their options as to what they can do following Mayor Mike Savage\u2019s lead in taking a cut in his salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After reading about what Savage was doing\u2014beginning April 1 he took a 20 per cent cut as a result of COVID19\u2014The Laker News asked Middle\/Upper Sackville-Lucasville-Beaver Bank representative Lisa Blackburn and Steve Streatch, who covers Waverley-Fall River-Musquodoboit Valley if they might be doing the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Streatch said he became aware of what Savage was doing on April 15. He is seeking further clarification as to how he, as a councillor, may be able to help in a meaningful way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m considering doing something similar but have not had the chance to confirm details with staff,\u201d said Streatch in an email interview. \u201cI may also consider donating an amount to some of the local district organizations that are in need, trying to help those in our communities, for example food bank, United way, meals to wheels, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blackburn said she\u2019s doing what she can to help during this crisis and am having conversations with her husband on the best possible way for her family to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it would be unfair to give a specific figure or percentage, recognizing that all of us on Council have different circumstances,\u201d said Blackburn. \u201cI don\u2019t want to contribute to an atmosphere of competition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;47&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was also discussing the best ways for that assistance to be put forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m also weighing whether a donation to a recognized local charity may be a better way to support our community now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/050-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9789\"\/><figcaption>Councillor Steve Streatch.  (Healey file photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Streatch thought the topic might be one that him and his fellow councillors would be talking about over the coming days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure Councillors will be discussing the options over the next few days, and may come up with a collective approach, to do our part to share the burden of our residents,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two were asked what they thought about Savage\u2019s goodwill gesture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it is noble of the Mayor to make this decision and it is the right thing to do, considering how so many others are impacted by the economic fall out from this pandemic,\u201d said Streatch. \u201cWe need to lead by example, and he has proven that he is prepared to do that, and I commend him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blackburn agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI appreciate Mayor Savage\u2019s demonstration of leadership,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s important to show our staff and all residents of HRM that we recognize the financial hit this pandemic has had on all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;6&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;7&#8243;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Both applaud Mayor Savage for leadership in taking 20 per cent salary cut FALL RIVER\/BEAVER BANK: Two local HRM councillors are considering their options as to what they can do following Mayor Mike Savage\u2019s lead in taking a cut in his salary.
