{"id":14271,"date":"2020-05-01T14:34:18","date_gmt":"2020-05-01T17:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=14271"},"modified":"2020-05-01T14:34:18","modified_gmt":"2020-05-01T17:34:18","slug":"five-missing-from-rcaf-helicopter-crash-presumed-deceased","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=14271","title":{"rendered":"Five missing from RCAF helicopter crash presumed deceased"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>EAST HANTS:<\/strong> The search for five missing Cyclone helicopter crew members has transitioned into a search and recovery efforts, the Department of National Defence said in a release on May 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sub-Lieutenant Matthew Pyke, a former volunteer firefighter from the Rawdon and Gore area, was among the five who are presumed to have died when the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) CH-148 Cyclone went down. It crashed into the Mediterranean Sea on Wednesday, April 29. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pyke was a Naval Warfare Officer who is originally from Truro, Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EW8qZTJWkAEt_t7-e1588353973692.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14272\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>Sub-Lieutenant Matthew Pyke. (Royal Canadian Navy photo)<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this time, one member, Sub-Lieutenant Abbigail Cowbrough, a Marine Systems Engineering Officer, originally from Toronto, Ontario, has been confirmed deceased. She now called the Eastern Passage area home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other missing four members who were aboard the aircraft are now officially considered missing and presumed deceased:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Captain Brenden Ian MacDonald, Pilot, originally from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia<\/li><li>Captain Kevin Hagen, Pilot, originally from Nanaimo, British Columbia<\/li><li>Captain Maxime Miron-Morin, Air Combat Systems Officer, originally from Trois-Rivi\u00e8res, Qu\u00e9bec<\/li><li>Master Corporal Matthew Cousins, Airborne Electronic Sensor Operator, originally from Guelph, Ontario<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional remains have been discovered during the search, but cannot be identified at this time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) will be doing everything possible over the next several days to confirm known details with the families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;47&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NATO Allies will be continuing recovery efforts at the scene as HMCS <em>Fredericton<\/em> departs for port in Italy. The ship is expected to arrive the morning of May 2, 2020, local time in Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A RCAF Flight Safety team will depart Canada today to investigate the circumstances of the accident. They will begin their work immediately upon arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The helicopter was deployed with HMCS <em>Fredericton<\/em> in the Mediterranean Sea as part of Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 under Operation REASSURANCE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time of the accident, the Canadian ship was conducting collaborative training with Italian and Turkish ships.
