{"id":14878,"date":"2020-06-19T17:38:12","date_gmt":"2020-06-19T20:38:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=14878"},"modified":"2020-06-19T17:38:12","modified_gmt":"2020-06-19T20:38:12","slug":"garlic-ious-family-affair-in-preparing-garlic-for-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=14878","title":{"rendered":"Garlic-ious: Family affair in preparing garlic for sale"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>FALL RIVER:<\/strong> The garlic people of Fall River are getting ready to do it again this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jones family plant their garlic in early fall, in this case October 2019 to prepare the crop for the following season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn June we pull the scapes, which is the shoot that comes out of the top of the garlic, we cut those down,\u201d said Peter Jones. \u201cWhen the scapes start to turn, when they come out of the garlic that is when you must cut them off, and they start to twist. If you don\u2019t the bulb doesn\u2019t get any bigger on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jones said if you leave them, they will turn into a flower and that is where all the energy will go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said in mid-August they start pulling the garlic out of the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have so many days that we have to dry it and so many days that we have to braid it, or it will dry out sow e can\u2019t braid it,\u201d said Jones. \u201cWe leave it on the stock, our garlic lasts about 10 months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jones said locals will know when they are ready to sell as they will have their sale sign down at the end of their driveway to let people know they\u2019re open for business. The home is located near Mason\u2019s store, so locals should keep their eyes peeled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI will make a post on our Facebook page that we\u2019re getting ready to sell, and people will start to call,\u201d he said. \u201cSome people will get 10, 12 braids worth of garlic (or $300 worth).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI know a lot of friends who work with my wife and they buy a lot of the garlic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make it a success, it truly is a family affair, said Jones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe all chip in on taking the garlic out, each of us with our own roles,\u201d said Jones, adding \u201cwe even beg people to come help us. There are 7,500 garlic we must take out so while it seems like there\u2019s not much, there really is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt takes about two days (eight hours each day) to pick it out. Once you start, we can\u2019t stop, we have to keep going even if the weekend is full of rain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;6&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He explained why the family started planting and selling the garlic\u2014from experience earlier in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI always watched my parents suffer, putting gifts on their credit card and stuff like that,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is why we basically started this so we can pay for Christmas and the other things, so we don\u2019t have to take it out of paycheques or put it on our credit cards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jones ended the interview with a bit of a funny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re a vampire, do know the garlic people are starting soon so you best stay away,\u201d he said with a chuckle as he rode off on his ride-on-lawn mower to finish some lawn cutting on a beautiful June night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;47&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;9&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FALL RIVER: The garlic people of Fall River are getting ready to do it again this year.
