WAVERLEY: <\/strong>Brooklyn Peyton is getting to combine two of the things she\u2019s most passionate about\u2014dogs and baking, and not necessarily in that order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peyton, a Waverley resident and soon-to-be Grade 12 student at Lockview High, has taken the time during the COVID19 lockdown to put those two things together and create Bark Bites by Brooklyn, for which she produces 100 per cent handmade doggie treats with spent brewers grains, natural ingredients and zero preservatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy dad has been doing a little brewery throughout this whole virus and would throw out the spent grain that he would use,\u201d said Brooklyn inside the family\u2019s home in their picturesque subdivision. \u201cI did some research to see what I could make with the leftover grain and came up with three recipes for dog treats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recipes include her \u201cPeanut Brewers\u201d (peanut butter, eggs, flour and spent grain); \u201cApple a Day Keeps the Vet Away\u201d (apple sauce, honey, flour, and spent grain), and \u201cPumpkin Pups\u201d (pumpkin pur\u00e9e, spent grain, eggs, and flour).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s been an incredibly good learning experience, said Peyton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt gives me a lot of experience running a business and dealing with customers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To date she has sold over eighty dog bags\u2014they are $10 for a 150-gram bag and $5 for a sample bag. She sells the treats in sizes that are small, medium, and large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019s taking things that would be thrown out\u2014the spent grain\u2014and making use of it. It has been such a learning experience and time filler, said dad Larry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cInstead of binge-watching TV during the downtime, she\u2019s binge baking the dog treats,\u201d said Larry. \u201cShe\u2019s taken the time for repurposing the grains, learning and advancing herself rather than falling behind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting Bark Bites by Brooklyn treats is something you cannot just stop by and pick up. It\u2019s an on-order product as she makes them very fresh. There\u2019s a waiting period, and it all depends on when Larry brews, which takes place every week or two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnce I go through the grains and there\u2019s none left, I can\u2019t do any more treats until dad brews again,\u201d said Peyton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before she sells the treats to anyone, she makes sure her \u201cguinea pig\u201d likes them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI give them to my dog, Hilo, first before I give them to anyone,\u201d she said. \u201cHe loves them. They\u2019re remarkably simple and healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peyton said the business isn\u2019t about the money for her, but the experience. After a bit of taste of the entrepreneurism, she would be game to running her own business when she\u2019s older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it was a really good opportunity for me to do this business, and something positive for me to undertake during COVID19,\u201d said Peyton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has found the whole thing very enjoyable. She was asked why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEver since I was little, I have loved baking, and that\u2019s how I am now,\u201d said Peyton. \u201cMaking these dog treats is really fun to do. I also love dogs.\u201d
