{"id":15664,"date":"2020-07-13T11:39:58","date_gmt":"2020-07-13T14:39:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=15664"},"modified":"2020-07-13T11:39:58","modified_gmt":"2020-07-13T14:39:58","slug":"rcmp-charge-189-drivers-with-impaired-driving-in-june","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=15664","title":{"rendered":"RCMP charge 189 drivers with impaired driving in June"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>DARTMOUTH:<\/strong> As Nova Scotia&#8217;s Provincial Police, road safety is a top priority. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an effort to keep citizens informed about enforcement on our roadways, the Nova Scotia RCMP is releasing statistics for all RCMP detachments in Nova Scotia for June 2020 on drivers charged for driving impaired by drugs or alcohol. \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the month of June 2020, Nova Scotia RCMP charged 189 drivers with impaired related offences. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>63 charged with Impaired Operation of a Conveyance by Alcohol<\/li><li>40 charged with Impaired Operation of a Conveyance by Drug<\/li><li>15 charged with Refusal of a Demand Made by a Peace Officer<\/li><li>71 issued driving suspensions for Operating a Conveyance While Having Consumed Alcohol.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Impaired driving investigations can be complex, especially when they involve both alcohol and drugs. This is why Nova Scotia RCMP officers receive a variety of training, and have several tools at their disposal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Nova Scotia, there are approximately 250 RCMP members with training related to drug-impaired driving, 33 of whom are Drug Recognition Experts (DREs). Nova Scotia RCMP also has 427 trained breath technicians who are qualified to operate instruments that determine a driver&#8217;s blood alcohol concentration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;21&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Failure or refusal to comply with a demand made by a peace officer for a sample for testing sobriety can result in criminal charges that have the same penalties as impaired driving. There are range of fines and periods of driving prohibition for those convicted of driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs. \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citizens are asked to call 911 immediately if you see a driver who is driving erratically or unsafely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some signs of an impaired driver to watch for: \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Driving unreasonably fast, slow or at an inconsistent speed \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Drifting in and out of lanes \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Tailgating and changing lanes frequently \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Making exceptionally wide turns \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Changing lanes or passing without sufficient clearance \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Overshooting or stopping well before stop signs or stop lights \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Disregarding signals and lights \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Approaching signals or leaving intersections too quickly or slowly \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Driving without headlights, failing to lower high beams or leaving turn signals on \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Driving with windows open in cold or inclement weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you call 911, you will be asked to provide the following: \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Your location \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 A description of the vehicle, including the license plate number, colour, make and model \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 The direction of travel for the vehicle \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 A description of the driver if visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;7&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;9&#8243;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DARTMOUTH: As Nova Scotia&#8217;s Provincial Police, road safety is a top priority.
