{"id":15904,"date":"2020-07-30T23:48:13","date_gmt":"2020-07-31T02:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=15904"},"modified":"2020-07-30T23:48:13","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T02:48:13","slug":"hrm-creates-strategic-road-safety-framework-website-for-residents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=15904","title":{"rendered":"HRM creates Strategic Road Safety Framework website for residents"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> To provide residents with updates regarding the actions outlined in the <em>Strategic Road Safety Framework<\/em>, a new web page and online dashboard have been created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/city-hall\/regional-council\/180717rc1422.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strategic Road Safety Framework<\/a><\/em>, the municipality is committed to the Towards Zero approach which is focused on moving closer towards zero fatalities and injuries for people using any mode of transportation. In 2018, Regional Council approved the goal of a 20 per cent reduction of fatal and injury collisions by 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/transportation\/streets-sidewalks\/road-safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Road Safety web page<\/a> and online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/transportation\/streets-sidewalks\/road-safety\/road-safety-dashboard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dashboard<\/a> includes updated collision data and information about progress being made on a number of road safety initiatives to help achieve the municipality\u2019s Towards Zero goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;21&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the ongoing road safety initiatives include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/transportation\/streets-sidewalks\/road-safety\/engineering-improvements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Engineering improvements<\/a> to help calm traffic<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/transportation\/streets-sidewalks\/road-safety\/traffic-control-improvements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Traffic control improvements<\/a> to address accessible pedestrian signals, leading pedestrian intervals, and other areas of traffic control<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/transportation\/streets-sidewalks\/road-safety\/speed-display-signs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Speed display signs<\/a> in strategic locations<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/transportation\/streets-sidewalks\/road-safety\/neighbourhood-speed-limit-reduction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neighbourhood speed limit<\/a> reduction in strategic locations<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In support of the <em>Strategic Road Safety Framework<\/em>, the 2020 Heads Up Halifax campaign has been expanded. Previously, the public awareness campaign ran for several months each year with a focus on crosswalk safety. The annual campaign, now running year-round, not only increases efforts to promote crosswalk safety but also encompasses the broader scope of road safety \u2014 and the importance of shared responsibility for everyone, whether you\u2019re walking, driving, rolling or cycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/transportation\/streets-sidewalks\/road-safety\/heads-halifax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Heads Up Halifax<\/a> campaign will be delivered primarily through digital outreach \u2014 with information shared via <a href=\"http:\/\/halifax.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">halifax.ca<\/a>, municipal social media accounts, and a network of digital screens located in transit terminals, recreation centres and other municipal facilities. Targeted print advertising will also be used.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow us on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hfxgov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twitter<\/a>, \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/hfxgov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Facebook\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hfxmoments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram<\/a>\u00a0for #HeadsUpHalifax information including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>safe practices on the road<\/li><li>rules for crosswalks<\/li><li>how to use new infrastructure such as two-stage bicycle turn boxes<\/li><li>municipal efforts to improve road safety across the Halifax region (e. g. &nbsp;speed humps, curb extensions, rectangular rapid flashing beacons, protected bike lanes, curb ramps with tactile walking surface indicators, etc.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Staff have developed<\/strong> specific, evidence-based action items that will transition the Strategic Road Safety Framework into the Strategic Road Safety Plan.
