{"id":16080,"date":"2020-08-10T21:03:21","date_gmt":"2020-08-11T00:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=16080"},"modified":"2020-08-10T21:03:21","modified_gmt":"2020-08-11T00:03:21","slug":"waverley-girls-advice-to-other-swimmers-stay-away-from-pink-bubbles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=16080","title":{"rendered":"Waverley girl\u2019s advice to other swimmers: \u201cStay away from pink bubbles.\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>WAVERLEY: <\/strong>Maria Legge learned a valuable lesson of why she shouldn&#8217;t touch anything strange looking in the water while out swimming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That comes after the seven-year-old, going into Grade 2 at Waverley Memorial School next month, was stung by what was likely a Portuguese man o\u2019 war while swimming at Lawrencetown Beach on Aug. 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMaria was playing in shallow water (in a full-length wet suit) and she saw something pink floating beside her,\u201d recalled mom Kristy in an interview on Aug. 10 with The Laker News. \u201cShe thought it was pink sunglasses and picked it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce it stung her, she threw it towards shore where it washed up on the beach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/20200809_132745-498x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16082\" width=\"984\" height=\"2023\"\/><figcaption>Maria Legge in hospital after the sting by the man o war. Submitted photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kristy said initially they were unsure exactly what had stung Maria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe came running to us and we could see some of the tentacles still attached to her fingers,\u201d said Kirsty. \u201cIt wasn&#8217;t until some bystanders came to investigate and suggested it might be a man o war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incident left the Legge family concerned and soon Maria was complaining of a burning sensation under her arm, dizzy and nauseous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe decided to take her straight to the IWK,\u201d said Kristy. \u201cShe was suffering from shock on the drive &#8211; very cold and lethargic. She even fell asleep for part of the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had to monitor her heart rate and breathing during the drive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;6&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now back home after a few hours of treatment, Maria is doing better, said mom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe&#8217;s doing much better now. Still sore and a bit swollen, and still stings a lot in cold water,\u201d she said. \u201cShe stayed home from Cheema today as I didn&#8217;t want the lake water irritating her fingers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The treatment for a man o\u2019 war sting includes rinsing the area with vinegar (it will be painful) and warm water and ibuprofen to treat the pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kristy said she has had a talk with Maria about swimming and seeing strange things in the water in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have told Maria to keep an eye out for strange things in the water,\u201d she said. \u201cIf she sees something strange to come tell the adults and not touch it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maria even had some advice from her ordeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was pretty tough and scary,\u201d said Maria. \u201cStay away from pink bubbles.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;7&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;9&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;21&#8243;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WAVERLEY: Maria Legge learned a valuable lesson of why she shouldn&#8217;t touch anything strange looking in the water while out swimming.
