{"id":17161,"date":"2020-10-04T21:42:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-05T00:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=17161"},"modified":"2020-10-04T21:42:00","modified_gmt":"2020-10-05T00:42:00","slug":"hrm-fire-wants-residents-to-be-safe-in-the-kitchen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=17161","title":{"rendered":"HRM Fire wants residents to be safe in the kitchen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;79&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WINDSOR JUNCTION:<\/strong> Halifax Regional Fire &amp; Emergency (HRFE) is encouraging residents to assess their kitchen for fire safety.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National Fire Prevention Week runs from Oct. 4-10 and the theme this year is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/fire-police\/fire\/fire-prevention-safety\/fire-prevention-week\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cServe Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kitchen fires are a leading cause of home fires and injury in Canada. Unattended cooking is the main cause of fires in the kitchen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep cooking areas clear of clutter, especially those materials which can ignite &#8212; such as oven mitts, dish towels, wooden utensils, and food packaging. Always keep an oven mitt and pan lid nearby when you\u2019re cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan to smother the flame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Test your smoke alarms regularly so everyone recognizes the sound and knows to get out. This is also a great opportunity to practice your home evacuation plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All residents have the responsibility to practice safe cooking habits in the kitchen.
