{"id":17186,"date":"2020-10-07T23:59:44","date_gmt":"2020-10-08T02:59:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=17186"},"modified":"2020-10-07T23:59:44","modified_gmt":"2020-10-08T02:59:44","slug":"run-for-the-cure-wellington-family-raises-more-than-3000-for-metastatic-breast-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=17186","title":{"rendered":"Run for the Cure: Wellington family raises more than $3,000 for metastatic breast cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;79&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WELLINGTON: <\/strong>On an early sunny Sunday afternoon more than 20 people gathered outside the Hart driveway ready to join the family in their neighbourhood CIBC Run for the Cure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of COVID19, the Run for the Cure\u2014like many events\u2014was postponed or moved to a virtual setting. That was no different here, only it resulted in smaller, more localized runs with not as big of crowds and plenty of socially distance walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, it was a five kilometre walk around the Oaken Hills subdivision (two laps from the Harts home on Calderwood) down towards Dakota Drive, across to connect with Abilene and then up to where Calderwood is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a good piece of walking along well-used residential subdivision street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_4754-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17242\"\/><figcaption>Even the puppers liked to be out for a Sunday afternoon walk for the CIBC Run for the Cure. The draw was made with Reporter Pat Healey being asked to draw the name prior to the walk. The money is going towards metastatic cancer<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Calderwood a start\/finish line was drawn in chalk by the two Hart girls\u2014one who goes to Holland Road School and the other to G.P. Vanier&#8211;so participants knew where to start. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the time neared, the group of people taking part gathered and on the count of three they were off heading out for the two-lap walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gaynor Hart was surprised at the turnout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s much better than I thought it was going to be,\u201d she said. \u201cI know a few people that are away so they couldn\u2019t come but this is wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_4734-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17240\"\/><figcaption>The Hart family held their CIBC Run for the Cure in their Calderwood Drive subdivision. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;6&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the walk was done and raising awareness specifically about metastatic<em> <\/em>breast cancer<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think they need more funding for their research,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The support meant the world to Hart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe live in a brilliant subdivision, so we\u2019ve had a lot of support from them,\u201d said Hart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;81&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Near the end of lap one, the walkers were greeted by a sign attached, ironically enough, a hockey net that said it all.
