{"id":18759,"date":"2020-12-15T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-15T19:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=18759"},"modified":"2020-12-15T15:30:00","modified_gmt":"2020-12-15T19:30:00","slug":"n-s-receives-first-covid19-vaccine-allotment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=18759","title":{"rendered":"N.S. receives first COVID19 vaccine allotment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;93&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;94&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> The province has received its first allotment of 1,950 doses of the Pfizer-BioNtech COVID-19 vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to strict transportation, handling and storage requirements, the first vaccinations will be administered in Halifax, where the vaccine is stored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is a milestone in the battle against the virus,&#8221; said Premier Stephen McNeil. &#8220;As the supply increases, every Nova Scotian will have access to the vaccine. But this will take many months, and I ask everyone to be patient in the meantime as the vaccine rollout begins with front-line health-care workers and the most vulnerable.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/VaccineClinic-3-1024x705.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18763\"\/><figcaption>(Communications N.S. photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The first immunization clinic, operated by Nova Scotia Public Health, will start Wednesday, Dec. 16. Those who work in the following areas will receive the vaccine this month:<br \/>&#8212; COVID-19 units in hospitals<br \/>&#8212; emergency departments<br \/>&#8212; critical care units<br \/>&#8212; birth unit and early labour unit at the IWK Health Centre<br \/>&#8212; regional care units<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;6&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long-term care staff directly involved in patient care in Central Zone, including designated caregivers, will receive the vaccine in December. All other long-term care staff, including designated caregivers, across the province will receive the vaccine between January and March.<br \/><br \/>Nova Scotia&#8217;s immunization plan takes a phased approach, following the National Advisory Committee on Immunization guidance on COVID-19 vaccine. The province will continue to receive small weekly shipments of vaccine until the end of March 2021, when the supply is expected to increase.<br \/><br \/>Between now and March the immunization effort will focus on:<br \/>&#8212; front-line health-care workers who are closely involved in the COVID-19 response<br \/>&#8212; long-term care residents and staff<br \/>&#8212; older Nova Scotians, starting with those 80 and older, then 75 and older, then 70 and older<br \/><br \/>&#8220;We must use the limited vaccine we receive where it will have the biggest impact in our health-care system and in our communities,&#8221; said Dr. Robert Strang, Nova Scotia&#8217;s chief medical officer of health. &#8220;As vaccine supply increases in the spring and summer months, we will be able to gradually expand who gets the vaccine and where.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/VaccineArrival-5-892x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18761\" width=\"598\" height=\"687\"\/><figcaption>The vaccine is put in a ultra-low freezer. That includes wearing a mask, maintaining two metres\/six feet of physical distance from others, practising proper hand hygiene, following gathering limits and staying home if unwell.<br \/><br \/>Quick Facts:<br \/>&#8212; the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine must be kept at minus 70 degrees Celsius in a special ultra-low temperature freezer<br \/>&#8212; doses of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine are also expected to arrive this month.
