HALIFAX:<\/strong> The Liberal government\u2019s continued neglect of emergency rooms in Nova Scotia has meant ER closures increased by 30 per cent in 2019\/2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe have a health care system that was in crisis before the pandemic hit,\u201d said NDP Health spokesperson Susan Leblanc. \u201cThis year\u2019s ER report shows that our hospitals are struggling to keep things running with the resources they have. <\/p>\n\n\n\n “We need a government that\u2019s ready to support frontline workers and ensure that emergency rooms are open when people expect them to be.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n [adrotate group=”6″]<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before the COVID-19 pandemic became the top priority for governments around the world, Nova Scotia was already dealing with a crisis in health care. The NDP has called for increased investment in public health care and suggested policy alternatives like physician assistants to help ERs and hospitals increase capacity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPeople need to be able to be able to get the health care they need when they need it,\u201d said NDP Leader Gary Burrill. \u201cWhile we deal with the pandemic and the fallout from it we can\u2019t ignore the crisis that already existed in health care in Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n [adrotate banner=”31″]<\/p>\n\n\n\n [adrotate banner=”34″]<\/p>\n\n\n\n “We need a government committed to making the investments needed so that ERs can provide the care they\u2019re meant to in our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n In 2018\/2019 ERs across Nova Scotia were closed a total of almost 49,000 hours; 26,000 of those were unscheduled.
