{"id":19400,"date":"2021-01-24T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-01-24T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=19400"},"modified":"2021-01-24T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-01-24T16:00:00","slug":"dream-come-true-lucy-phillips-headed-to-ncaa-division-1-commits-to-quinnipiac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=19400","title":{"rendered":"Dream come true: Lucy Phillips headed to NCAA Division 1; commits to Quinnipiac"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;105&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FALL RIVER:<\/strong> Like love at first sight, the same was true when Lucy Phillips looked at Quinnipiac University, albeit online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phillips, a star goalie with the Station Six Fir<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/stationsixfire\">e<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/nsmfhl.goalline.ca\/\">Maritime Major (U18) Female Hockey League<\/a>, announced her commitment to the <a href=\"https:\/\/gobobcats.com\/sports\/womens-ice-hockey\">NCAA Division 1 team<\/a> based in Hamden, Ct. campus on her Facebook and Instagram pages last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom the moment I first looked at the campus online in June to this day I\u2019ve been in love with it,\u201d said the former Fall River resident, who now calls the Tantallon area home with her family, in an interview with The Laker News on Jan. 18 \u201cThe campus and rink look beautiful I can\u2019t wait to visit it. The coaching staff Cassie Turner and Amanda Alessi Mazzotta are so welcoming and fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel like I\u2019ve already been there and met everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phillips\u2019 commitment is for the 2023-24 hockey season, so she will finish this year with the Amanda Boulegon-coached <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/stationsixfire\">Station Six Fire <\/a>and play one more year, her Grade 12 season, then head to the PWHL in Ontario for a gap year to gear her up for NCAA Division 1 play before heading to Quinnipiac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;8&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/140179934_913695696104177_7385101172254393805_o-1-1024x1021.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19402\" width=\"748\" height=\"740\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>While playing in the PWHL she will billet and earn some extra credits in school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sir John A MacDonald High School student is grateful for the opportunity to go play there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel that it\u2019s the right spot for me and I\u2019m just happy that they want me,\u201d Phillips told The Laker News, one of her jersey sponsors with Station Six. \u201cSince day one Cass and Mazz have been in contact with me probably every second week or so. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;6&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;7&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a Jan. 22 story in The Chronicle Herald, Phillips spoke of having Canadian women\u2019s hockey goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens as a sounding board when she needs advice or a little push. Desbiens game-worn pads are in Phillips possession after a meeting the two had after a Canada-US Rivalry series game in Moncton in Dec. 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s an awesome person. Ann-Renee has helped me out quite a bit,\u201d said Phillips in The Herald Story. \u201cShe\u2019s helped me out with many things this past year. She gave me her pads and has sent me sticks and skates. Those are the pads I\u2019m wearing now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s always there when I need her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Phillips, it\u2019s been a dream of hers since she was a little girl to suit up and call herself a NCAA Division 1 goalie. Now she will get that chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEver since I was a little kid I remember looking up to the players and goalies in that league thinking that they were the pros,\u201d said Phillips. \u201cI\u2019ve always dreamed of playing Division 1 hockey and it\u2019s crazy to think that\u2019s it\u2019s actually going to happen.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;92&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a shortened season to date due to COVID19, Phillips, the 2019 Top Goalie in the NSFMHL (now the Maritime Major Female Hockey League), is 3-2 (won loss) with a 1.80 Goals Against Average this season. The year has been sidelined due to COVID19 restrictions, but play is expected to resume shortly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is eager for the extra year of school and hockey at a higher competitive level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really excited about this extra year because I feel that it will allow me to mature, develop and adjust to a much faster pace before heading straight into university hockey for the 2023\/24 season,\u201d said Phillips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t be more excited for what\u2019s ahead of me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;84&#8243;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;105&#8243;] FALL RIVER: Like love at first sight, the same was true when Lucy Phillips looked at Quinnipiac University, albeit online.
