{"id":19972,"date":"2021-02-28T20:50:38","date_gmt":"2021-03-01T00:50:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=19972"},"modified":"2021-02-28T20:50:38","modified_gmt":"2021-03-01T00:50:38","slug":"meh-clarifies-aten-funding-rejection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=19972","title":{"rendered":"MEH clarifies ATEN funding request rejection"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;78&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;113&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SHUBENACADIE:<\/strong> The Municipality of East Hants (MEH) is setting the record straight over a misunderstanding in a denial of a funding request to a community organization that focuses on people\u2019s mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, After Trauma Empowerment Network\u2019s (ATEN) co-founder Margaret Mauger posted a letter of disappointment on MEH\u2019s decision to not include the Shubenacadie not-for-profit. They had sought funding for counselling services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m disheartened, disappointed and confused by the news that we would not receive funding from the East Hants Municipality because \u201cmental health doesn\u2019t align with municipal mandates,\u201d said Mauger in the letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It continued in parts saying, \u201cThis raises many concerns and questions: Isn\u2019t mental health, especially the past year with COVID-19 19 and the mass shooting, a given and unquestionable priority under all municipal, provincial and federal mandates?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the letter, dated Feb. 19, Mauger notes that she and colleague Vida Woodworth, invite and welcome MEH to meet with them to have an informative discussion regarding the prevalence, need and demand for mental health services and supports in East Hants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe would appreciate the opportunity to discuss how mental health wellness could be included in your future strategic planning,\u201d the letter concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;2&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;114&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On two Facebook community pages in East Hants, comments were directed at the Municipality with disappointment and anger over their decision to not fund ATEN, and that it did not fit in the municipal mandate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, that isn\u2019t exactly the case. ATEN had requested funding from MEH as part of their Community Partnership Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe grant request was specifically to fund counselling services, which is not a service that is in line with municipal grant programs,\u201d said municipal spokeswoman Jody MacArthur to The Laker News on Feb. 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the provincial Department of Health &amp; Wellness is committed to improving mental health care for Nova Scotians and to working with partners across health care, communities, and government to improve mental health services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Municipality of East Hants cares very much about the mental health and wellbeing of our community members and all Nova Scotians,\u201d said MacArthur. \u201cAs such, council funds many organizations and programs that contribute to our community\u2019s collective health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cATEN\u2019s application for funding counselling services does not align with our current municipal grant programs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;84&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;25&#8243;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;78&#8243;] [adrotate banner=&#8221;113&#8243;] SHUBENACADIE: The Municipality of East Hants (MEH) is setting the record straight over a misunderstanding in a denial of a funding request to a community organization that focuses on people\u2019s mental health.
