ANTIGONISH:<\/strong> If 2020 taught us anything, it is the importance of having a safe home.\u00a0\u00a0
St. Francis Xavier University\u2019s\u00a0Extension\u00a0Department (Extension)<\/a>, in partnership with\u00a0the\u00a0Community Housing Transformation Centre\u00a0(the Centre)<\/a>, is pleased to announce the launch of\u00a0Build\u00a0Together: Strengthening the Community Housing Sector in Nova Scotia<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 The project will engage members of the community housing sector in a\u00a0process\u00a0aimed at supporting and\u00a0strengthening\u00a0the sector in Nova Scotia\u00a0by sharing\u00a0successes, recognizing strengths\u00a0and challenges, identifying areas for capacity enhancement,\u00a0and developing\u00a0ways of\u00a0working\u00a0together for greater collective impact.\u00a0
\u201cTogether we have an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the community housing sector in Nova Scotia,\u00a0which plays a huge role in ensuring people living on low income in our province have adequate housing,\u201d Pauline MacIntosh,\u00a0Program Staff\u00a0at Extension says.

\u201cIt is critical to engage with the community housing sector in Nova Scotia at this time to see how it can best be supported to do its work better and faster for greater positive impact.\u201d<\/em> – Pauline MacIntosh, Extension<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The Government of Canada announced its first-ever\u00a0National Housing Strategy<\/a>\u00a0(NHS) in 2017, followed by an increased investment in 2019.
The\u00a0Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation<\/a>\u00a0is leading the strategy and the\u00a0$55 billion\u00a0associated investments.\u00a0The Centre, governed by eight community housing associations,\u00a0is responsible for disseminating more than $50 million in NHS\u00a0funding\u00a0through its various community housing funds.\u00a0
“This funding\u00a0provides the housing sector with an unprecedented opportunity to make significant inroads in addressing the core housing need experienced by approximately 1.7 million Canadians,\u201d MacIntosh says.\u00a0\u00a0
\u201cWith a housing crisis now plaguing most major cities in Canada, we stand at an absolutely pivotal crossroad in developing projects and policies that will pave the way for the future of community housing,\u201d\u00a0Ren\u00e9e H\u00e9bert, the Centre\u2019s\u00a0Program\u00a0Manager for the Maritimes\u00a0adds.

\u201cWhen several organizations within the community housing sector in Nova Scotia expressed a need to organize and work together to create a provincial structure, it was imperative the Centre lends its support. We are happy to grant $100,000 to strengthen the sector here, as well as offer resources and support to bring this project forward.\u201d <\/em>

To launch the engagement process, people working and volunteering in non-profit and co-operative housing groups across the province are\u00a0being\u00a0asked to complete a survey. Those who participate will\u00a0be able to enter their\u00a0name\u00a0in a draw\u00a0to win\u00a0one of two $250\u00a0donations\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a0community housing group of\u00a0their choice.\u00a0
A\u00a0core element of the\u00a0Build\u00a0Together project is a\u00a0calendar\u00a0of approximately 20 engagement sessions\u00a0for non-profit and co-operative housing groups in\u00a0Nova Scotia,\u00a0including sessions for\u00a0groups focused on housing for Indigenous peoples, persons of African descent,\u00a0the LGBTQQIP2SAA\u00a0community, and others.\u00a0

Based on the findings of the engagement process, the group\u00a0aims\u00a0to define sector priorities and\u00a0determine a sustainable model for moving forward\u00a0in tandem.\u00a0
\u201cOur goal is\u00a0that the engagement process will lead to a better supported, connected,\u00a0and more unified community housing sector in Nova Scotia.”\u00a0
