(Healey photo)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WINDSOR JUNCTION\/EAST HANTS:<\/strong> Youth from the Fall River and East Hants areas are among the many saying yes to the COVID-19 vaccine jab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The uptake from those 12-years-old and older has been fairly steady, said Nova Scotia\u2019s top doc Dr. Robert Strang in a recent interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Siblings Tristan and Camryn Giddens, of Windsor Junction, got their shots June 2 at the Fall River Sobeys Pharmacy clinics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe got the call and were down to the Sobeys in about 10 minutes, ready to go,\u201d said Camryn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camryn said she was excited to get the jab because it made her feel better knowing she was part of the solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to not only fully protect ourselves and our parents, but our grandparents who live down in the Valley,\u201d she said. \u201cWe wanted to take all the safety precautions we have to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe thought if we could get the vaccine early, we could help get to the 75 per cent even quicker.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;111&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Youth talk excitement getting Covid vaccinated\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IjGqhtgIZhI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tristan said with things opening back up and teens hanging out again, he wanted to be at least partially protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to get mine done as early as I could,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/195078967_4156615381063283_6908453387560118498_n-e1623813231546.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21912\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"\/><figcaption>Camryn and Tristan Giddens after getting their vaccine in early June. (Submitted photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>While Camryn was thrilled to get the vaccine, it didn\u2019t come without its fears. She\u2019s afraid of needles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI usually had to get a bribe with a chocolate bar to get the flu needle,\u201d she said. \u201cI knew, in a global pandemic, that getting this needle was being so helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also never had to be bribed with a chocolate bar to get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is their message to other youth who are uncertain about getting the vaccine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would say definitely get it,\u201d said Camryn. \u201cIt is so worth it. It made me feel like I was doing my part in the fight against COVID-19. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If you don\u2019t want to get it for you, get it for your grandparents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely worth getting,\u201d added Tristan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;2&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lantz youth Cierra Ashley said she got the vaccine so she could see her friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited to get to see my friends, but I\u2019m also scared that the needle is going to hurt,\u201d Ashley said a couple days before she was to get the Pfizer vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked why other youth should get the vaccine, Cierra had a simple answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe should get it so we can open up more and eventually get things back to normal, so you don&#8217;t have to wear a mask all the time.,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick Legge, of the Enfield area, said while he wasn\u2019t excited to get the vaccine, he knew it was the right thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m terrified of needles, but I wanted to do it so I can be healthy in the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting the vaccine won\u2019t only help you either, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy getting the vaccine you will not only help keep yourself safe but all of us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;123&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;92&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beaver Bank resident Emily Alford said she wanted to get the vaccine to do her part to get life back minus masks and with travel allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was nervous and excited,\u201d said Alford. \u201cI don&#8217;t like needles by any means, but I was excited for this one because of how the last two years have been.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She knows her friends and many others have been struggling during the pandemic over the past 16 months with sports and other events cancelled. I think it is,\u201d he said in a June 7 COVID-19 briefing. \u201cWe have a particularly good uptake for the 12-18-year-olds with our vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s really encouraging.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kait Walsh-MacDougall was a bit selfish as she said in why she wanted to get the vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I was to pick my number one reason for getting it, it would be a bit selfish as I want to be able to go to PEI and see all our relatives who live there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said she was excited and nervous about getting the jab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think everyone should get it so we can get back to normal and begin living with COVID,\u201d said Walsh-MacDougall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;7&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;30&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quinn Cantfell, of Lantz wanted to get the vaccine because it will help deal with the COVID-19 virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to be able to help in any way I can,\u201d said Quinn. \u201cI was telling all my friends about it, and I couldn\u2019t wait to get vaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the vaccine will help in protecting people from further severe spread of the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI personally think everyone should get the vaccine, if possible,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s her message to other kids her age who are uncertain if they should get the vaccine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would say to them that they are helping in stopping this mess,\u201d she said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t even hurt, and it would make them feel better knowing that they are helping save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;84&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;95&#8243;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;78&#8243;] [adrotate banner=&#8221;93&#8243;] MAIN PHOTO: Siblings Camryn n Tristan Giddens were eager to get their vaccine shots, even if Camryn doesn\u2019t like needles.
