{"id":23624,"date":"2021-09-20T00:42:10","date_gmt":"2021-09-20T03:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=23624"},"modified":"2021-09-20T00:42:10","modified_gmt":"2021-09-20T03:42:10","slug":"studentvote21-wmes-students-cast-their-ballot-in-mock-federal-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=23624","title":{"rendered":"StudentVote21: WMES students cast their ballot in mock federal election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;93&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WAVERLEY:<\/strong> Students at Waverley Memorial School say it\u2019s important for Canadians to vote, and that\u2019s why they enjoyed taking part in the mock federal election through the Student Vote [program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle Dey oversaw the running of the Student Vote at both WMES and Georges P. Vanier Junior High, who held their vote on Monday Sept. 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashlyn Day; Jace Lightfoot; Ben Creamer; Lexi Giles; and Elvin Lerman were five of the students that were selected by the school to speak to us about the experience and what they enjoyed the most about voting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashlyn said she enjoyed how students got to try out each job that is available on election day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI liked being the Information Officer the best,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;123&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Elvin liked being a returning officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI liked signing my initials on people\u2019s ballots,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jace worked as a voting registrar in the mock election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI liked crossing off the names and giving out the ballots,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben said he enjoyed putting the ballot in the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a good experience for all kids to get a chance to do this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the choices on who to vote for were made based on questions the students got to ask the candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen one candidate didn\u2019t answer the questions, it was frustrating,\u201d said Ben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;6&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"510\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_4302.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23627\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_4302.jpg 510w, https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_4302-239x300.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Lexi said the students went to a website where students from schools could ask their respective candidates questions. She also mentioned the candidate that didn\u2019t answer all the questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat made us question whether they could be a good candidate and if I should vote for them,\u201d said Lexi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All five said they learned about what each party\u2014the Liberals; Conservative; NDP; Green; and People\u2019s Party of Canada&#8211;were all about. They understand why it\u2019s important for people to vote when there\u2019s an election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou get to choose someone who has similar values to you, and it\u2019s good not to have a dictatorship,\u201d said Elvin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important that all Canadians have a say,\u201d said Ashlyn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVoting is important because everyone should have a say about what is happening around them,\u201d said Lexi. \u201cIf you don\u2019t have a say you can\u2019t help change things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;95&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_4291.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23625\" width=\"773\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_4291.jpg 640w, https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_4291-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 773px) 100vw, 773px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Jace said he chose the person he voted for because of what they said they would do for the environment if they got elected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe person I chose I can\u2019t say his name, but he\u2019s going to clean up the ocean and environment stuff,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I found that really good so that\u2019s why I picked him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben said he did some research before he voted. That included listening to the questions the candidate answered to get a feel for them and a quiz to see which party had the most similar values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI also just went with my gut instinct,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_4298-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23626\" width=\"654\" height=\"880\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;133&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;84&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elvin said he voted for a party that puts the environment as its top priority, specifically climate changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cClimate change is bad, and we need to do something about it,\u201d said Elvin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Ashlyn spoke of the class watching a few minutes of one of the federal leaders debates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey interrupt each other a lot,\u201d she said. \u201cIt helped us decide who we wanted to vote for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lexi concurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe watched the candidates answer the questions on such things as Indigenous rights, etc.,\u201d she said. \u201cI voted the person I thought was actually doing good stuff based on their answers.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results of the Student Vote mock election will be released after all polls close across Canada on Monday night.
