{"id":24515,"date":"2021-11-02T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-02T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=24515"},"modified":"2021-11-02T11:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-11-02T14:00:00","slug":"grade-5-students-proud-to-help-less-fortunate-with-socktober-fundraiser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=24515","title":{"rendered":"Grade 5 students proud to help less fortunate with Socktober fundraiser"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;105&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FLETCHERS LAKE:<\/strong> Students at Holland Road Elementary continue to show their compassion for others through in-school fundraisers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One such example is the 516 items that Grade 5\u2019s in Nicole LeGrow\u2019s class at the school collected during their Socktober fundraiser. All items were donated to the COAT Association, based in Elmsdale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In total the students collected 302 pairs of socks; 103 hats; 55 pairs of underwear; 51 pairs of mittens; three scarves; and two coats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_8359-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24520\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;2&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students collected the items through special days in class, allowed by Ms. LeGrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMs. LeGrow allowed up to have special days such as pajama day, hat day, and camp day,\u201d said student Jaxon Haddon, 10. \u201cWe brought in donations to participate and with that money raised we purchased undergarments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Oct. 29, Cathy Miller, the founder of the non-profit COAT, was on hand to speak to the students outside the school about what the donation to COAT meant and a bit of what COAT is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller said she was amazed at what the students at the Fletchers Lake-based school did for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis means the world to me,\u201d she said of the donations. \u201cI\u2019m so happy. I could be given a million dollars and it wouldn\u2019t make me any happier then this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students spoke to The Laker News about what it meant to them to do Socktober, where they collected almost 10 boxes of various sizes full of socks and underwear, plus winter coats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt makes me feel very proud of myself and my class because we raised things for people less fortunate than us,\u201d said Gavin Garagon, 9, of Fall River. \u201cThese are things we often take for granted in our everyday lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it&#8217;s amazing because less fortunate people get to have the things they need for the winter,\u201d added Ava Mannett, 10, of Miller Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/FC3tMB6XoAAQDQ4-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24526\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_8365-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24521\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;95&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addison Manette, 10, of Wellington said it felt great to give back to others in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel that we take some things for granted,\u201d said Addison. \u201cIt feels really good to help others out and to give to those in need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily Michaud, of Fletchers Lake, said it felt good to partake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt feels very good to donate to know we are helping out a good cause,\u201d said Michaud, 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ten-year-old Hunter Dickinson said he wanted to help out people who don\u2019t have as much as he has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s the simple things that some people don\u2019t have, and we don&#8217;t often think about such as socks,\u2019 said Hunter, of Fall River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olivia Hollett, 10, of Wellington said it meant a lot to participate because the class worked hard and as a team to collect so many items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important that people are warm in the winter,\u201d said Olivia. \u201cIt makes me feel good that we can help to be apart of this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/248039180_565933748036889_3128574474966286888_n-e1635825970341.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24567\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_8350-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24519\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;148&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;6&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students were also asked what they think the reaction those receiving their items will eb. A couple of students offered answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think they are going to feel happy and relieved that its one thing that they don\u2019t have to stress or worry about this winter,\u201d said Ava Hobbs, 10, of Fall River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think people will feel happy knowing that students of the next generation are caring and thoughtful to donate so many things,\u201d said eleven-year-old Mili Sankey, of Fall River. \u201cI\u2019m very proud of our efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller said she was impressed by what the students collected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t expecting nearly this much,\u201d said Miller. \u201cIt\u2019s so good to see them so young to start giving back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/FC3wW8tX0AQ_ZW5-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24527\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;126&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;84&#8243;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;105&#8243;] [adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;] FLETCHERS LAKE: Students at Holland Road Elementary continue to show their compassion for others through in-school fundraisers.
