{"id":26183,"date":"2022-01-31T23:01:24","date_gmt":"2022-02-01T03:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=26183"},"modified":"2022-01-31T23:01:24","modified_gmt":"2022-02-01T03:01:24","slug":"nsar-proposed-provincial-taxes-jeopardizes-homeownership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=26183","title":{"rendered":"NSAR; Proposed provincial taxes jeopardizes homeownership"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;95&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> The Tim Houston government has proposed out-of-province ownership taxes that are causing serious concern for the Nova Scotia Association of REALTORS\u00ae (NSAR) and their 1,900 members across the province. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NSAR says these taxes will have unintended and negative consequences on Nova Scotia\u2019s economy, tripling owners&#8217; taxes causing a serious impact on construction and service industries, particularly in rural Nova Scotia. Despite a government promise to remain open and transparent, the Association\u2019s efforts to consult on these proposed taxes have fallen on deaf ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve heard from REALTORS\u00ae, current homeowners, and potential buyers,\u201d says Roger Boutilier, CEO of NSAR. \u201cWe believe the government\u2019s intent is to increase housing supply, but none of the stakeholders we have spoken to think this taxation is going to meaningfully increase supply. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What it will do is penalize people who have retirement, rental, or vacation properties in Nova Scotia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;6&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Duckworth, Broker of Duckworth <a>Realty<\/a> is one of the many who is expressing his concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere will be less construction, less renovation, less purchasing at local restaurants and shops,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And it will result in Nova Scotia getting the reputation that you will be penalized if you want to have a second home here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re telling these people to go somewhere else; we don\u2019t want you here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;156&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NSAR has continuously reached out to the Premier and Minister of Finance\u2019s offices to facilitate conversations around the proposed measures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Replies from the province indicate that staff are exploring policy and implementation options and will have conversations with key stakeholders in the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s disappointing that our new provincial government is creating policy without consulting experts and the people impacted by it.\u201d says Boutilier, \u201cWhat we need is meaningful consultations and collaborative solutions from all levels of government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;7&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;147&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;84&#8243;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;95&#8243;] [adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;] HALIFAX: The Tim Houston government has proposed out-of-province ownership taxes that are causing serious concern for the Nova Scotia Association of REALTORS\u00ae (NSAR) and their 1,900 members across the province.
