{"id":28404,"date":"2022-05-08T17:01:30","date_gmt":"2022-05-08T20:01:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=28404"},"modified":"2022-05-08T17:01:30","modified_gmt":"2022-05-08T20:01:30","slug":"ns-invests-hiaa-attract-new-routes-passengers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=28404","title":{"rendered":"N.S. invests $13 million into HIAA with aim to attract new routes, passengers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;93&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;105&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX STANFIELD:<\/strong> The province and the Halifax International Airport Authority have had a \u201cgreat sense of partnership\u201d during the negotiation process that has led to a $13 million investment by the province to HIAA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an announcement in the Observation Deck at Halifax Stanfield Airport on May 6, Economic Development Minister Susan Corkum-Greek said the support from the province will go to Halifax Stanfield\u2019s Air Access Fund. That fund is used to attract new routes and passengers to what many term as an economic driver of Nova Scotia\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The province is also investing $6.3 million into J.A. Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport as part of the same announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;95&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Corkum-Greek responded to a question from The Laker News regarding how the negotiation process went between the two sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere has been a great sense of partnership with the HIAA,\u201d she said. \u201cI think our government, and frankly the government that preceded us, have tried to have honest conversations throughout the challenges of the pandemic to first identify the challenges and work collectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is an instance where working together, this is clearly a good investment in recovery and future growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_8296-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28410\"\/><figcaption>HIAA Vice-President, Business Development and Chief Commercial Officer, Marie Manning. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>HIAA Vice-President, Business Development and Chief Commercial Officer, Marie Manning, said they\u2019re grateful for this additional financial support from the provincial government to help them re-establish a strong air service network for their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAir service connections will be critical in supporting regional economic recovery,\u201d said Manning. \u201cNow more than ever, we need to partner with our airlines to ensure service is returned to our region in a timely manner, allowing our tourism markets to gain back the momentum they&#8217;ve lost since COVID-19.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;7&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the investment will help out two-fold. The funds are available right now, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving this incentive available for the airlines as they recover will help support our recovery,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ll be able to entice the airlines to setup and establish here at Halifax.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manning was asked about the process of negotiations and how they went with the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe provincial government has been extremely supportive,\u201d she said. \u2018We\u2019re really appreciative the fact that they understand the role we play as an airport to support their mandate in terms of business development and immigration and tourism growth. They understand and they get it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Corkum-Greek said the province acknowledges that in the past the Air Access Fund has been designed to gain international flights, but that\u2019s different now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe realized coming out of the pandemic we have to rebuild our domestic routes in order to further strengthen our international network,\u201d said Corkum-Greek. \u201cOur government also did not put any provisions where such and such percentage would be for one or the other.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;161&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;159&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_8260-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28407\"\/><figcaption>Susan Corkum-Greek, Minister of Economic Development for N.S. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;84&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;162&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the province&#8217;s work with the airport authority has convinced them that those folks know their business, they\u2019re being thoughtful and very strategic in the investments they make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe feel confident in this investment and what it will gain,&#8217; said Corkum-Greek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acting Minister of Education Minister (for last week) and Minister of Advanced Education Brian Wong was the emcee for the announcement. He is also the MLA for Waverley-Fall River-Beaver Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hants East MLA John A.
