{"id":28999,"date":"2022-06-03T08:26:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-03T11:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=28999"},"modified":"2022-06-03T08:26:00","modified_gmt":"2022-06-03T11:26:00","slug":"waverley-hockey-player-recruited-to-play-at-lake-placid-based-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=28999","title":{"rendered":"Waverley hockey player recruited to play at Lake Placid-based school"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;164&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;111&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WAVERLEY:<\/strong> A Waverley girls hockey player has her eyes on playing at a high-level of women\u2019s hockey, and to do that she\u2019s heading down south to play the sport she loves next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hilary Wilkin has announced she has committed to play at Northwood High School to don the jersey of the Under-19 Huskies, based out of Lake Placid, N.Y.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said she had considered prep schools in Canada, however with COVID-19 they weren\u2019t able to see them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to explore other options and we looked into the U.S.,\u201d said Wilkin. \u201cThere were a few schools recommended to me down there, and Northwood was one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;78&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;84&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilkin, 14, explained how the recruitment process went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe sent a video of me playing a game down to the coach with Northwood and then we set up a zoom meeting,\u201d she said. \u201cWe went down and visit after he said he was interested in my ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI did a tour and some interviews with the coach and administration with the school.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After that, she got word that they would be signing the Lockview High student to play with them next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be playing my Grade 10, 11, and 12 years there and play on the U-19 team,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilkin is pleased to get the opportunity. She was also recently named as a summer camp invitee by Hockey Nova Scotia for the U-16 girls team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy biggest reason of going there is simply for exposure and the opportunity,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a hard opportunity to pass up. Just being able to skate every single day and train every day. It will help my development so much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;8&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;161&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team travels around the U.S. playing against other teams, it will see her play many games and improve her skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said her end goal is to eventually land with a top college hockey team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to be able to play on one of those whether it\u2019s here in Canada or in the U.S.,\u201d said Wilkin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilkin\u2019s friends are excited for her, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re obviously sad that I\u2019m going away, and I\u2019ll miss all my friends and family,\u201d said Wilkin. \u201cThey\u2019re all happy for me that I get this opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She hasn\u2019t ever been away from home for an extended period and will be living with a dorm mate<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never had an experience like this,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019ll definitely be different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;150&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;156&#8243;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;164&#8243;] [adrotate banner=&#8221;111&#8243;] WAVERLEY: A Waverley girls hockey player has her eyes on playing at a high-level of women\u2019s hockey, and to do that she\u2019s heading down south to play the sport she loves next year.
