{"id":31302,"date":"2022-09-16T08:09:39","date_gmt":"2022-09-16T11:09:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=31302"},"modified":"2022-09-16T08:09:39","modified_gmt":"2022-09-16T11:09:39","slug":"nsgeu-to-premier-houston-keep-our-blood-supply-safe-and-available-for-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=31302","title":{"rendered":"NSGEU to Premier Houston: Keep our blood supply safe and available for patients"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;174&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;95&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From a press release<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union President Sandra Mullen is calling on the provincial government to protect Nova Scotians from pay-for-plasma corporate interests in light of the Canadian Blood Service signing a 15-year agreement with multinational corporation, Grifols, to open private plasma collection centres in Canada. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This agreement includes a plan to collect paid-for plasma product.A move to a pay-for-plasma system undermines the goal of achieving self-sufficiency in blood products \u2013 which is one of the reasons CBS was actually created \u2013 and may endanger patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early 80\u2019s, Canada\u2019s blood supply was rocked by the tainted blood scandal, which killed thousands and infected more than 20,000 Canadians with HIV and Hepatitis C.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;72&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the aftermath of this scandal, <a href=\"https:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001s7TiUxzXafi9n8Gr4SwrMw0mQnJh7xjWISX_NjlK-p8vdtGE2A8xzA6j6oqSVKRh5C_dILiOOsqwe_6j9hCH08juH-teOGJMphfs1-2R-otY7WujSBf4kIIs1WkQVTdYSWGxlntMSY2LcIqoqLEydWhdhQFZUwQlPnpmf4lFztHSRolJ9LRmy-1POEwNWVeS3SeFVOn1XCA=&amp;c=bA3I04EzyqVL7fjjFJLhO_7dO-B-XAe1lVAQfomrJSMByCrLoTiuAQ==&amp;ch=5AetvFejSWk-q612o3z4kzPpQFy-eBJQSj9U4JyBGYgElMQ29SZxwQ==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Krever inquiry<\/a> investigated and concluded that that in order to keep Canada\u2019s blood supply safe, we must never pay people for their donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis move by CBS will change the way blood is collected in Canada and not for the better,\u201d said NSGEU President Sandra Mullen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCanadian Blood Services is derelict in their responsibilities to protect Nova Scotians, and in light of this new agreement, it is up to the Premier of Nova Scotia to take action.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;6&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NSGEU is calling upon the Tim Houston government to bring forward legislation to ban paid donations of any blood products in Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dThe NSGEU has called on previous governments and Ministers of Health to bring forward legislation and received the response that there was no imminent threat of paid donations in Nova Scotia,&#8221; said Mullen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, CBS\u2019s recent decision to enter into partnership with Grifols is now a clear and present danger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt would be irresponsible for our government to stand by and allow companies to enter our province and put our public blood supply at-risk,&#8221;
