{"id":33840,"date":"2023-01-25T08:11:25","date_gmt":"2023-01-25T12:11:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=33840"},"modified":"2023-01-25T08:11:25","modified_gmt":"2023-01-25T12:11:25","slug":"ipoans-regional-council-slams-door-on-public-input-on-landlord-registry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=33840","title":{"rendered":"IPOANS: Regional Council slams door on public input on landlord registry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;169&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> The Investment Property Owners Association of N.S. is voicing its dissatisfaction at Halifax Regional Council passing a mandatory landlord registry during first reading. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite HRM staff telling Mayor Mike Savage, \u201cWe haven\u2019t spoken with landlords recently,\u201d Regional Council overwhelmingly rejected holding a public hearing on its proposed $1.2 million landlord registry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A mandatory landlord registry was approved at first reading by Halifax Regional Council on Tuesday.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;71&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite an effort by Councillors David Hendsbee and Paul Russell to schedule a public hearing at the second reading stage, all of the remaining Councillors voted against holding a public hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany Councillors selectively target and blame those in the private sector that own and operate buildings that provide the majority of affordable rental housing in this city,\u201d said Kevin Russell, Executive Director of the Investment Property Owners Association of Nova Scotia.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe vast majority of private sector rental housing providers pay their taxes, follow the rules and act responsibly.&nbsp; It is undemocratic and unfair for Halifax Regional Council to deny our right to speak.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;2&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;188&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russell noted that Council\u2019s refusal to hold a public hearing also pre-empted discussion on the idea raised by Mayor Mike Savage during yesterday\u2019s Council meeting to give rental housing providers more compliance time with the By-Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIPOANS would have loved to have discussed Mayor Savage\u2019s idea about a reasonable compliance period, but Council shut down that idea too,\u201d added Russell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;92&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russell noted that unlike at City Hall, the Nova Scotia Legislature \u2013 through the Law Amendments Committee and Private and Local Bills Committee \u2013 allow all Nova Scotians to have their say.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IPOANS will be contacting Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister John Lohr to exercise the provincial government\u2019s right under the Halifax Regional Municipality Charter to set aside the landlord registry by-law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They want that done  until a public hearing is held and discussion with IPOANS is held on Mayor Savage\u2019s proposal to extend the compliance period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;148&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;123&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;126&#8243;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;] [adrotate banner=&#8221;169&#8243;] HALIFAX: The Investment Property Owners Association of N.S. is voicing its dissatisfaction at Halifax Regional Council passing a mandatory landlord registry during first reading.
