From an NDP press release<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n HALIFAX:<\/strong> The Houston government\u2019s \u201cthank you\u201d bonus excludes full-time permanent nurses that are off on medical leave. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Katie Doyle has been off work since August 2022 but is eager to return to her job as an LPN following a second surgery later this spring for colon cancer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI\u2019ve held a permanent position as a nurse for 18 years and it doesn\u2019t feel fair that because I\u2019m off with cancer, I won\u2019t be included in this retention program,\u201d said Doyle. \u201cI worked through all the early waves of COVID, afraid I would bring it home to my three young children and never thought about leaving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n “It feels very disrespectful now to hear the Premier say I don\u2019t deserve a thank you, simply because I haven\u2019t been able to work for part of the year they\u2019ve decided to cover.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n [adrotate banner=”190″]<\/p>\n\n\n\n [adrotate banner=”31″]<\/p>\n\n\n\n The announcement made by the Houston government right before the spring budget excludes nurses on medical leave and casual nurses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In the weeks following the announcement, a change was made to ensure nurses on maternity leave are included. Doyle will get a pro-rated amount for the months worked in fiscal 2022\/23 before her first surgery in August 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe know that retaining nurses is one of the most important things we can do right now to help the over-stressed health care system,” said NDP Leader Claudia Chender. <\/p>\n\n\n\n ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n [adrotate banner=”71″]<\/p>\n\n\n\n [adrotate banner=”34″]<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Full-time nurses on medical leave should absolutely receive this benefit,\u201d said Chender. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s not Katie\u2019s fault that she can\u2019t work due to illness.
