RCMP begin consultations to form apology for historical use of street checks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8217;127&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;105&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DARTMOUTH:<\/strong> To inform an apology the Nova Scotia RCMP will be making to African Nova Scotians and all people of African descent for the harm caused by the historical use of street checks and for other interactions that have had a negative impact on the community, community consultation sessions are being held across the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first took place on Sept. 18 in Gibson Woods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI know this apology is long overdue. And I acknowledge a lot of work needs to be done to start to rebuild the fractured relationship with the community,\u201d said Assistant Commissioner Dennis Daley, Commanding Officer of the Nova Scotia RCMP. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s especially important we hear from those who will be affected by the apology; we need to get the apology right and pursue systemic change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;71&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 14 consultations, which were recommended by a steering committee struck to move the apology work forward, are being organized in African Nova Scotian communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sessions, which will also inform an action plan that will follow the apology, are being hosted by local residents and attended by members of the Nova Scotia RCMP\u2019s senior leadership team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo ensure the upcoming apology \u2013 and the actions that follow \u2013 are meaningful, I\u2019ve established a steering committee to provide guidance and support,\u201d says A\/Comm.
